It doesn’t happen as often as it would if the fight was actually fair, but it’s nice to see the underdog win for a change.
Israel Lancho had the misfortune of getting impaled by a bull, last Wednesday, in Madrid. The bull’s horn went in 8 inches and doctors said it was a miracle that it didn’t hit the matador’s heart. 30-year-old Israel is now recuperating. I wonder if he’s ever going to go into the bull-ring again.
UPDATE: One of our visitors left a comment saying the matador died of complications. That is not true, but, while he received medical attention, the bull did in fact die as a result of his wounds. Others said this is tradition and should be accepted as such…Well, the shearing of the beasts, donkey basketball, Grindadrap or Afghan dog-fights are also old traditions, but I refuse to respect them.

johny, what kind of loving god would put us on this planet just to torture the beautiful animals he created just for our pleasure? for those of you who also think bulls (or any other creature on the planet for that matter) aren’t sentient beings… are you fucking insane? “sentient” comes from the latin word “sentire”, meaning to feel, to discern or perceive by the senses, having a faculty, or faculties, of sensation and perception, especially sensitive; as, the sentient extremities of nerves, which terminate in the various organs or tissues. these animals feel! i don’t care how long this tradition has been going on. it doesn’t make it right.
bull fighting facts: http://www.runningofthenudes.com/bullfighting_facts.asp
“The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?” ~ Jeremy Bentham
“The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence that it is not utterly absurd; indeed, in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more often likely to be foolish than sensible.”
~ Bertrand Russell
Anyone who goes on about tradition when regarding the cruelty of bullfights is an ignoramus. There are many traditions that were decided, at a later time when mankind had “matured” at last, to be unethical. The selling of daughters into slavery, for example, being one of them, or rather just slavery in general. Labeling anything as a “tradition” doesn’t make it right, it just makes it OLD, and OLD things tend to become obsolete, superfluous, and otherwise labeled ridiculous. Just because something’s been around a long time doesn’t make it noble (again slavery, and as an added subject, the dehumanization of women over the centuries by labeling them as possessions). I’m not saying this man should have suffered, but I’m not going to say he didn’t have it coming either. Just because something isn’t human doesn’t mean it should be okay to torture, injure, and provoke it. I agree with Nadja’s quote of Bertrand Russel.
In pointe of fact, the massive genocide of Jews, Gypsies, the handicapped, etc was widely accepted by a large mass of people known as Nazi’s, and the world seemed to disagree with that too. I wonder if we should revisit that concept because maybe everyone else was just being a bit uptight, right?
And as for Grand Poobah’s comment of animals are food and man eats animal, that bull was not food, that bull was a toy and a victim of prolonged suffering for the amusement by slaves to tradition. I doubt stabbing the bull that many times and waving a flag in it’s face is helping it get onto someone’s table.
Ah, yes “Morality.” Something the Christians are parading out at those comments they’ve “judged” (not allowed) to be not on par with their deity’s instructions for a righteous life. These wonderful beacons of holiness find every opportunity of reminding those of us who are so unfortunate to not be Christian, just how wrng we are for thinking differently.
Man vs Bull. The bull should win sometimes in order for this to be considered sport. Otherwise, this tradition is cruel. And the cruelty brings the crowd.
Just like the decline of the quality of music being produced today, we the public get what we ask for. Then we bitch about it. Good thing the internet allows us to claim our superiority over others. Anonymously, of course.
The internet also provides countless examples of brutal irony.
Such as the comment calling out “pussy boys,” typed from the safe confines of his mother’s basement.
