Who ever said you have to go to an amusement park to enjoy a roller-coaster ride?
Jeremy Reid decided to put all his effort into creating a fully-working roller-coaster ride in his very own backyard. It only cost him 9.500 pounds of lumber, a lot of time and $5.500, a very small price considering he created a ride with a maximum drop of 20 feet and a “lightning speed” of 20mph.
That wood seems a little rotten to me, so I wouldn’t have the guts to take a ride on these guy’s roller-coaster, but still it’s pretty decent work.

Great design. That reminds me of the old creaky wood roller coaster at valleyfair in minnesota. It was much smaller than the other roller coasters, but just as frightening.
nice, i would love to do that if i had a yard big enough XD but props to the man who did this in his own yard. i’m guessing from the photos that he has to walk the car up the hill tho. maybe he should add a pully system of sorts to let him pull himself up with a crank…

That looks like more than nine and a half pounds worth of lumber to me, and I’m sure it cost more than five and a half dollars to build!

It ends up that not the whole world use the period to separate the decimals, and not all countries use the comma to separate numbers by groups of 3.

RE: “Rotten” wood…it’s not rotten. All wood, if not treated with stain or heavy-duty weather protectant, weathers to a silver-grey like that. If he pressure-washed the whole rig, it’d look nearly new. So it’s not rotten. In fact, it looks like pressure-treated pine, which means it’ll still be around in 12-15 years. Longer for the boards that aren’t in ground contact.

Yep, you’re right, it’s 9,500 pounds of lumber. Using a period where we use commas (and vice versa) is how much of the world writes numbers, particularly Europe. So, this is probably a European writer and not a mistake.

You can see the pulley system plain as day, so no he would not have to walk it up the hill.
Also, the wood is not rotten, it has just been pressure treated.

The man that built the coaster is probably a retired carny or amusement park operator with a good sense of humor. The wood is pressure treated and will last a very long time. He obviously has an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of how a commercial coaster works. The structure appears very sound and he looks to be a very competent carpenter. I think he did a real whiz bang up job. Probably built it for his kids or grandkids.

Yes, dude, it is just a roller coaster. I’m sorry not everyone can be a Wright brother. Some of us just enjoy building wooden things, aren’t really trying to change the world, and just aren’t quite brilliant enough to make a brand-new form of transportation practical. You sound like an ass. You build something this much fun in your yard, and then you can complain. But then you’ll sound like an egomaniacal cad.

The coaster is actually quite safe. It’s been featured on the Travel Channel before.
It’s really neat and is actually pretty thrilling from it’s design. It’s simple, but it’s a good coaster. :]
