Miguelin, is a 6.5 meters tall animated baby that Spain has created for its pavilion, at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
And if you thing this toddler’s just a big old doll, you’re sadly mistaken. Miguelin breaths, blinks and dreams of the cities we leave to our future generations, while smiling to visitors that walk by. The baby’s “mother” is Spanish film director, Isabel Coixet, who picked this theme both because of “the passion China and Spain share for children”, and as a way of showing that our actions have consequences on our children.
Miguelin, who was constructed in the US, dreams of the future, and his dreams will be animated, for all visitors to see. I’m sure this big baby will become a star when the Shanghai Expo opens, on May 1st.

And when those babies grow up and go to university, China has a passion for running them over with tanks.
Dripping with irony to say China and Spain have a passion for children: these are two of the nations with the lowest birth rates on earth and in China it is still enforced by draconian law…
Good to know that Spain can afford to purchase a 21 feet tall baby from a firm in the US while it sports a 20%+ unemployment rate. Glad to know they’ve got their priorities straight…
I stopped readig after this clutz said China has a passion for children. What a moron.
Wow Really, China’s love for children? Clearly this must be a mis-print.
oooooooow….I’ll bet mom doesn’t want another one.
Isabel Coixet is obviously another liberal ignoramus… completely ignorant of current events in China regarding children.
I can’t tell the sex of this baby. But I pity the poor workers who would have had to install either set! And, of course, it can’t be a girl. The Chinese regularly drown baby girls just because they are girls. And of course, there’s the required abortion because more than one child per family isn’t wanted. I’d watch out the ‘child loving’ culture of China doesn’t destroy this Baby just on the chance that it might be a female.
First, this is creepy. Second, Chosen for China’s passion for children? Ok, using the logic of Ms. Coixet, I propose a 50 foot tall interactive Hitler in Berlin this coming Chanukah to celebrate Germany’s tireless dedication to the civil rights of Europe’s Jewish community.
dis baby is raciss….it’s white and gots bloo eyes….dat’s unfair to us black folk…we still be being held back yall
No mention of Ron Mueck?
Looks liek perhaps the baby is a firstborn boy. Lucky for him. His sisters all got killed.
In response to the idiotic replies, if you spent 10 minutes in China you would quickly see that Isabel Coixet is spot on in describing the passion that the Chinese have for their children.
Yes, there are pros and cons to the one child policy but it really isn’t enforced as strictly as Western media would have you believe. Unfortunately it has caused a major imbalance in the ratio of boys to girls because of the long term implicatiions for a family if they have a girl in what is still an overwhelmingly patriarchal society.
But don’t confuse complex social problems such as over-population and sexism with a ‘hatred’ for children because it simply isn’t the case.
Of course. Murder and forced abortion have nothing to do with the “passion” the Chinese have for their children. I wonder how the mothers of those babies feel about the “complex social problems”.
Your lack of education is holding you back. This may be racist in the fact that people, incorrectly, expected less of you because you are black. For this I am sorry. You were let down and held back by those who were responsible. That includes yourself (for believing them), parents, fami9ly, church, educators. Only you can fix this by getting an education. First step is learning proper English. It was a lie that Ebonics is not going to hold you back.
Second step is to spread the word to vulnerable youth so they do not suffer as you did. Read up on what Bill Cosby has to say. You cannot depend on anyone else to fix your problems. You have the strength and power to change this. After that you have an obligation to educate others. You CAN do it!
Surely you gest!
Geez, Susan, what turnip truck did you fall of? Tyrone is probably not black and is pretending to be stupid. The writer used proper contractions when using the apostrophe…Unless the two of you are in cahoots so you could have a platform for your “educational” rant. Give it a rest, sweetie.
I live in Spain and this woman’s a joke!! And what she said about children is both stupid and untrue. Spanish mothers can be very good, but it is commonplece to smaxk, scream obscenitties at kids in public and basically disrespect them. TV is their babysitter… I know more mothers like that than I know loving, sweet ones…
