I have heard, or seen somewhere whether it was a documentary, or just someone telling me (I cannot remember), that the reason for the lip plate is for the man’s penis. if that really is the case I would find the lip stretching and plate to be very degrading. however I do not know if that is really the case? does anyone know?

how do they kiss? how do you? you kiss the screen and send it by e-mail? how do you have sex wearing pants? if you were talking about woman genital mutilation i could understand, but this… there are much more painful rituals tradition than this, like some tribes sharpening they teeth and others types of body piercing, used in both woman and man. From your point of view we should abolish tattooing and body piercing just because they are painful. The only reason that you don’t see this type of body piercing in the so called civilized world, is that it’s considered unaesthetic and unpractical. If not, i can ashore you that you would be seeing lots of people using it in the streets of New York, London, Paris…

FYI guys: don’t generalize by just looking few pictures. The pictures represent the people of the Mure in Ethiopia. They form under 0.005% of the Ethiopian people. Can these guys represent Ethiopians? These are people similar to the Botocudo people in Brazil.

Yes, not all Ethiopians include this cultural practice. I have many Ethiopian friends and none of them practice such adornment.

Beauty really is cultural and a matter of perception. This may be unattractive to some, but its beautiful to others.

RaeRawr, you should feel comfortable walking around with out your top on whenever you want. I wish more girls would, then it would be more common and no one would think any different. If you go to addis ababa I’m sure there are very few women that walk around with their tops off because of the cultural norms of the powerful countries that seem to pervade every inch of this world. Make a difference, next time you are swimming just flip the top off (tell your friend to do it as well so you are more comfortable) … hell i’ll join you

Im doing a report on Ethiopia in school. And It came to my mind, how do they go through all that pain? I mean really, we whine if we get a little cut, theese people must be really sense-less to be able to take in that much pain. But then again they most likely had years of practice. Btw, the girls are really lucky, hah I wish I could walk around with no top on. That would be sooo much more compfortable.

Its no different i hope they look at our women and think the exact same you state these. its body adornment. differnce between make-up and their face paintings? nothing . You dont know if the girl with the biggest lip plate is the most attractive in the tribe.

But french fries, if we are talking about learning here, you should probably know that there are better ways to express opinions and less profane but more effective ways to tell someone where to shove it.
