Much like the Giant’s Causeway, the Garny Gorge is made out of a high number of basalt columns. It’s an absolute must-see if you find yourself in Armenia. It’s a wonderful canyon shaped by the ever-flowing river Goght river. Atop the basalt walls of the gorge the famous 1st century Garni temple can be seen.
Garni Gorge offers its visitors an incredible view and makes them feel like they’re in a fantasy place.

holy shit… wow
Hard to tell which way up you are.
Strange too, how the columns appear to be sheared off square at the end.
You can also find basalt columns in Yellowstone National Park as well as Eastern Washington State and Oregon. They are amazing, some in E. Washington are like giant halls of columns you can walk through.
Amazing. We have a ton of columnar basalt here in Idaho, but you’ll be lucky to see a 10′ section in one piece. In fact, there’s lots of money in providing 1-3 foot sections of that basalt for all sorts of landscaping purposes.
I can’t believe that sort of grand scale formation, except that I know it makes perfect geologic sense…
It’s really the fossilized hive of giant bees.
Thanks Spooky, way cool pics way cool site!
I would like to give my own backside a good kicking again for not going to see this when I had a chance. I was only about 18 miles away and realised that I needed to get back to the port.
‘Shopped
and who said rocks aren’t cool?
Wait for it:
ROCKS ROCK!
I deeply apologize.
Looks like Devils Post pile in California..
Why are you soo cynical? If you had even an ounce of intelligence, you would know that basalt columns are a phenomenon which have occured in many and various parts of the earth
As far as I understand this is the result of very slow cooling lava composed of a material which naturally grows into a crystalline structure. In this case, a hectagonal shape. Usually lava cools too fast and the crystals grow only to microscopic size. These must have cooled over many years allowing the crystals to grow to such large proportions. Truly magnificent!
