Turning in to a tree must be a horrifying experience…
Dede is a 35 year old Indonesian fisherman who until recently thought he would be killed by the tree-like worts covering most of his body. It all started after he accidentally cut his knee as a teenager. Small warts started appearing on his hands and feet and, in time, they got so big and numerous that he lost use of his hands and couldn’t perform any household activity. His wife walked out on him and he had to take care of his children in terrible conditions. He was forced to join a local freak show, alongside people with different, peculiar diseases, just to put food on the table.
The local doctors could do nothing to help him and he was sure he was going to die from his condition, as the warts started to spread all over his body. Thankfully, a famous US dermatologist, from the University of Maryland, learned of his condition and thought he could help. He came to Indonesia, examined Dede, took blood samples and discovered that this terrible condition, that’s literally turning a man into a tree is caused by the common Human Papilloma Virus responsible for the small warts people get on their hands. Unfortunately for Dede he had a genetic fault that made his immune system helpless against the virus, it just couldn’t contain it, so it was free to grow inside his body. He came to the conclusion that a form of vitamin A could reduce the quantity of warts and hopefully help him regain control of his hands.
After a series of financial and political setbacks, Dede has started receiving treatment and is currently making progress.

Just watched the documentary on his treatment. What an amazing guy to still be trying to smile through such a terrible ailment. Isn’t it mad how seeing things can affect you physically. I can’t stop scratching !!
The case is being documented on the Discovery Channel and airs sometime this week between October 5 through October 10, 2008. You can also see a clip of a BBC documentary on Youtube. And if theres any doubts that this is real, try watching the Discovery channel, because cases like this are showcased all the time, some even far more disturbing than this one. And theyre on a few times a week.

Hi to all of you, I know it’s hard for your to behave since your disease is genetic. The man has been living with the virus effect for years. How nice it’s to leave to comments that will have more impact on him than he went through already. Try to give others with a scientific views a chance to explore and read the techniques and efforts made to change the man’s life instead of throwing stone at each other. If you can see somebody else mistake you have/ should behave differently but I don’t see it and it’s sad for this so – called new generation

hi..i was a medical intern in hasan sadikin hospital,west java (the hospital where dede, the tree man was treated)..i met him personally a couple of times..so it’s not true that this photo was photoshopped..some plastic surgeons have managed to remove large amount of warts from his skin..but to totally remove the warts,are basically impossible..he’s home with his family now..and the government has made the commitment to pay all of his medical bills…lol
