Nigel, gearing can definitely create gains in efficiency. Look at a winch or a block and tackle to see what I mean.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.
Talk about putting the cart before the horse...

To those who say this is more efficient way to use 1 HP, horseshit. The contraption weighs way more than a simple cart, so there can't possibly be any gain in efficiency.

Interestingly enough...I have a design that achieves the same without the use of a horse. It's called the Flintstones 3000. It converts weight inside a back wheel into propulsion. You can view the diagrams by visiting my myspace site: www.myspace.com/anamenson it's in the pictures section called "Advanced Strategic Warfare" There's also a neat little perpetuum mobile device called the GPT. Enjoy.

The horse is just a decoy. It is meant to be driven by the slaves of the new world order.

you people don't get it, he's trying to take away the horse shoe factor as well keeping the horse as natural as possible, not trapping the horse... did you even look at the pictures?

It's not as inhumane as you green dorks might think.

This isn't cruel - far from it. This provides mechanical advantage to a horse in the same way a bicycle provides mechanical advantage to a human.

I can carry a 50 pound pack approximately 30 miles in a day, before I'm exhausted. With a bike, I can carry over 100 pounds, over 120 miles in a day before exhaustion. Which method is more efficient?

The reason it is more efficient to bike than walk is simple. It doesn't take much energy to move an object perpendicular to gravity. Any force that overcomes friction will do. Walking doesn't just apply horizontal forces, though. Most of the energy consumed in walking is simply used to keep the body from crashing into the ground. If you can channel some of that fall-prevention energy into forward motion (any type of pushing or pulling) you increase the efficiency of your gait. The horse is pulling more than he would if he was harnessed to the front of this vehicle, but every bit of extra force is applied to forward motion, rather than in fighting gravity. He can travel farther for the same total energy output. A LOT farther, and a LOT faster.
