The Tree Goats of Morocco

Did you know goats could climb trees? Well, anyway, I didn’t but it turns out, goats climb trees very often in Morocco.

These Moroccan goats you see in the photos climb the Argan trees with incredible ease, in order to get to the delicious fruits that the locals use to make oil. I knew some things about goats, but the fact that they climb trees was not one of them. And before you start yelling “It’s photoshopped!” check out the video at the bottom.

  11. My thoughts are that they at one time were being persued by a predator and took to the tree up high for safety. So the trait continues. Its truely amazing and one of a kind.

  14. Rozmarija says:

It’s true. They eat the “nuts” which grow on those trees. After the nuts have passed through their digestive system and are expelled, boys gather and sell them to people who process them and express an oil from them, which is used in cooking. The digestive system softens the out shell. That’s the truth, no kidding. We have a little bottle of it but have never tried it.

I saw this myself in 1973, after reading about it and not believing it either. There was no other vegetation anywhere else around, so I assumed the goats went into the tree to get what little green stuff existed. I didn’t know about the nuts.

  16. cribcat says:

If you were hungry you’d climb a tree in a heartbeat. Even dogs can climb trees

  17. Angel says:

Goats do not climb trees!!! It is the sheperds who put the goats up in the tree. They do it because there is no grass in Marroco, then they can eat leaves from the trees.

  18. Beefy says:

Angel you really should check the internet before saying dumb shit. Google tree climbing goats and you’ll find video of them climbing the argan trees. A new idiot finds the internet every day!!!

  19. Jenna says:

    Amazing! That’s so cool.

  20. Tomaz says:

Saw this in Peru up in the Andes. But not quite as many as these Moroccans… Thinking about it now I suppose it was the same reason – not much grass around so they thought they’d give the tree a go.

  21. Jesse says:

Nahhh guys, they weren’t climbing the trees, that’s where goats come from. They are credited as being the only animal in the world that spawns from plant life. It’s true, look it up. They don’t mate and give birth to babies, like all other animals in the world. No joke. I thought everyone already knew this though, the goats featured in the video were ripe, so they fell, hence the saying “The goat doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

  22. Brian says:

Ive seen them recently was in Morocco 2 moths ago and saw the goats climbing trees near Agadir.

  33. Amanda says:

Cool! Do you think a Goat Tree would grow in the midwest, or is it too humid here? Also, how difficult is it to rake up uncollected, over-ripe goats from your yard? (I don’t want to accidentally run over one with the lawn mower, might damage my blades)

  34. Eddie says:

  35. Colton says:

So am I to understand that watching a goat fall out of a tree should be that much more hilarious than watching a squirrel fall out of a tree?

  44. Hi guys:

Ever been to Morocco? Next time you are there just ask a cab driver to take you to see these Argan trees (around July when the fruit falls). Goats do in fact like to climb these trees or why would they have the Argan woodlands guarded to keep them out. They love to eat the fruit. I do not suggest any humans to eat it. Tastes pretty bad I heard. The oil is good for the skin and I have seen skin care products on the market made from the oil.

  45. [...] Some goats like to spend thier afternoon in a tree [...]

  46. Chouaib says:

I’m from morocco and I come from the south of the country (Souss) where this is a common thing. This even more spectacular when you know that this tree (Argan tree) has stings on the branches ….
