I first became aware of this effect a few years ago when a story and picture made the rounds of a giant python which looked supernaturally huge until people pointed out that the boom of the backhoe it was hanging from was much longer that it appeared and was aimed much more forward than it seemed. Other pictures lack physical context that would provide size information.

I have no doubt they are big rats compared to what these people are used to since they have photographed them but they aren’t the monsters they seem to be.
