It’s a status symbol to let others judge you positively when they have no idea who you are. If you want to be educated, you can spend your time in a library or online. If you achieve greatness without a degree, like Gates or Jobs or Einstein, then your achievement is your status symbol. For regular schmucks, a piece of paper is all they have.

I called admissions several years ago and they told me anyone in North America can attend classes, lectures and seminars for free, as an unregistered student.
But you do not get credit for it!
