I am very sorry (?) to tell you the place near Kaliningrad (German Koenigsberg before World War II) is NOT a unique place on Earth. There is a very similar place in Poland near Gryfino (German Greifenhagen near Stettin before WWII). It is called "Curved forest", but here all the trees are shaped in a similar manner. You can see some photos on the Gryfino city website: http://www.gryfino.pl/WrotaGryfina/chapter_56734.asp
or on the DeviantArt gallery of my friend: http://seawhisper.deviantart.com/gallery/
(we visited the place together just 2 months ago).

And the most reasonable theory is that the trees were shaped by the man in order to get appropriate pieces of wood for furniture or ship construction. Since both places are on former German territories, it seems that the method of artificially shaping the trees must have been wider known and applied.
