OK, so maybe the ivory is fossilized, That really doesn’t mean anything. By using Ivory they continue to make ivory a desirable get for poachers.

That’s like saying “legit” diamond mining doesn’t contribute to the atrocities of blood diamonds.

Stuart, You do realize that other animals besides elephants have ivory. You do realize that you do not have to kill animals to collect ivory. The animals die a natural death and leave their tusk behind. They collect the tusks for the shore lines and islands in the surrounding area. You should be ashamed of your ignorance and holier than thou attitude.

Okay, so perhaps they do contribute to the killing of elephants (or maybe they don’t–that’s debatable), but let’s put matters in perspective: Think about how many natural environments have been decimated to sustain the lifestyles that both you and I are currently indulging in. Before you naively condemn these people for the only readily negative quality of their choices, consider how many great things they’ve done in the process of becoming nearly completely independent from modern industrial structures. Praise is what is merited here, not shame.

Cool idea, but you are hypocrites. Carving into ivory, you are supporting the needless slaughter of poor, innocent animals. If you offer tours and charge for them, then you are NOT completely self reliant. If you sell your “art” in Tofino, you are NOT self sufficient. You contribute to DEATH. STOP FEEDING THE IVORY INDUSTRY YOU PIGS!

There is enough ivory already harvested in the world to keep carvers going for the rest of their lives. There is also Mastodon ivory, and Walrus.
