Geldrop is probably an aggregation of Gelre (Guelders) and dorp (village). Somehow a metathesis of the ‘r’ occurred. The village was part of the historical Duchy of Guelders and the lords of Geldrop had a castle built in the 14 century. This castle was last renovated in 1977. Worth a visit, not far from the cathedral in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

I live in Geldrop and from what I know is that in the mid ’90s, Geldrop decided to renovate the district area. Someone noticed the streets formed a ‘ring’-like pattern. Since a lot of new street names were needed, they picked character names from the LOTR novels. Well…not just names, fortunately, they also considered people needed a proper postal address which was easy to pronounce, or at least not sound totally gibberish. All street names in Geldrop carry a certain theme by district, and this is definitely the funniest one.
