India’s Two-Year-Old Snake Charmers

While other two-year-olds are just learning to walk and talk, the children of the nomad Vadi Tribe are introduced to the centuries-old art of snake charming. All the children of the Vadi Tribe come face to face with a poisonous cobra at age two, and go through a ten-year ritual, in which they learn all the secrets of snake charming. Both boys and girls must learn to handle snakes. While men must be able to manipulate cobras by playing the flute, the women must know how to take care of the reptiles when their husbands or brothers are away. The Vadi treat snakes like their own children, never keeping them away from their natural habitat for more than seven months. Any longer than that would be disrespectful to the snakes, according to Babanath Mithunath Madari, the 60-year-old Vadi chief-charmer. In fact, the only time a snake actually bit his charmer, was when he kept it for more than seven months. Vadi snake-charmers don’t cut the fangs of their snakes, instead they feed them an herbal mixture which, they say,  makes their deadly poison harmless. Unfortunately, in 1991, the thousand-year-old tradition of snake-charming was banned in India, and the Vadi tribe are stripped of their snakes whenever they are confronted by the police. They never spend more than six months in the same place. Tokyo’s Real-Life RX78 Gundam

Gundam fans all over the world, rejoice! The life-sized RX78 Gundam robot has been completed and is expecting visitors. Just like the Hello Kitty Castle in Shanghai, China, might become a pilgrimage site for pink-loving girls, Tokyo’s RX78 could turn into the same thing for robot-anime enthusiasts. Announced back in March, as a way of celebrating 30 years since the debut of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, the 1:1 sale Gundam has just been completed. The RX78 Gundam towers 18 meters, features a movable head, 50 light-radiating points on his body, and shoots smoke from various fiberglass-reinforced plastic parts. The popular mech will be watching over Odaiba’s Shiokaze Park until August 31st. Hopefully they’ll just move it somewhere else after that, because depriving Gundam fans of such a symbol would be a regular crime. Some might think the RX78 Gundam looks a bit too retro for 2009, but it’s a regular icon in Japanese culture, so choosing what model to build was never in question. Lilliputan Terracotta Army Invades England

40,000 small terracotta soldiers storm into the Spanish Barn, in Torquay, Devon. The Terracotta Army is a famous art collection, by British artist Anthony Gormley, featuring 40,000 clay figurines. They were all made in St. Helen’s, Merseyside, as a community project. Children and their families were given clay balls to manipulate into a human shape, with two eyes. Each person created up to 200 terracotta figurines per day. Now the Terracotta Army has been moved from London’s South Bank Center into the Torre Abbey’s Spanish Barn, in Torquay, Devon. All the 40,000 lilliputian terracotta soldiers must face in the same direction and must be viewed from a certain angle. That’s why volunteers were needed to walk through the ranks and arrange the figurines. The young lady in the second photo is one such volunteer, walking carefully among the 8 to 26-cm-tall statuettes, in her socks. If one of the soldiers were to fall, it could lead to a disastrous domino effect. Anthony Gormley’s Terracotta Army will be stationed inside the abbey for the summer, if you fancy a visit. Edible Dough Hat

Now here’s one fashion accessory the world’s fattest man, or the world’s fattest athlete would just love to have. I tried tracing these photos to the original source to get more info, but got nowhere. I found them on a Russian photo site, but judging by the ingredients used, this tasty hat wasn’t made in Russia. Anyway, even though I wasn’t able to get any information about this edible hat, the photos pretty much speak for themselves. Congratulations to the designer/baker on a job well done! If anyone recognizes the photos, please leave a link to the original source in a comment, so I can credit the work. edible-hat0 edible-hat2 edible-hat3 edible-hat4 edible-hat5 edible-hat6 edible-hat7 edible-hat8 edible-hat9 edible-hat10

Largest Smurf Meeting Ever

Some of the most adorable characters in cartoon history, the Smurfs have an incredibly large fan-base. 2,510 students from Swansea University, UK, got together on June 8th to stage the largest Smurf meeting ever, and set a new world record. Participants painted themselves blue and wore pointy white hats, just like their beloved characters. The 2,510 Smurf fans managed to pulverize the old record for largest Smurf gathering, which was 1,253 Smurfs in one place, set in July 2008, in Castleblayney, Northern Ireland. Judging by the photos, the real-life Smurfs had a great time setting this record. Home-Made Death-Star Grill

That’s right Star Wars fans, the deadliest weapon in the universe has been reduced to cooking burgers in somebody’s backyard. Bryan A. Tate though it would be interesting to use two common Weber grills to create the ultimate Star Wars cooking device, the Death Star  Grill. It is painted in completely safe barbecue paint on the inside and engine enamel on the outside, so it should hold up to temperatures up to 500 degrees. It even has some cool Star Destroyer handles and the best thing is, you can have it. That’s right, Bryan is auctioning his Death Star Grill on eBay and the opening bid is $50. via bryanatate death-star-grill death-star-grill3 death-star-grill4 death-star-grill5 death-star-grill6 death-star-grill7 death-star-grill8

iShoes – Walking is Obsolete

One more step towards turning ourselves into regular vegetables, the iShoes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for progress, but some of these ingenious inventions are misunderstood by users and end up “helping” us in a very bad way, if you know what I mean. For example, these motorized shoes could make walking obsolete if they go into mass production, so the little exercise we did by walking to work, or to a shop, will be lost. The iShoes are very easy to maneuver, you just strap them on to your shoes, and accelerate by pressing a button on a handheld remote. Using the iShoes you’ll be able to ride at a speed of 13.5 mph, turning a 20 minute walk into a 5 minute ride. They are relatively easy to use, most people are able to ride at full speed after only a day or two. The iShoes run on Lithium batteries that take about 2 hours to charge and last about 30 minutes or 2-3 miles. They’re also able to take you uphill, thanks to their powerful 500 watt motor. Unfortunately, the iShoes are designed to be used only in dry conditions, so they’re of no help if you want to use them on rainy days. via Hacked Gadgets ishoes ishoes2 ishoes3

The Chinese Angel-Cat

This weird cat with wings was spotted in Chonqing, China. Although you might think the angel-cat of Chonqing is unique, there have been other cats with wings in Russia and the United States. Her owner says she wasn’t born like this, her wings started growing when she was one year old. A worker from the Chonqing Museum of Natural History says this kind of oddities are becoming quite common and are the results of pollution in the area. This particular angel cat will be adopted by the Chonqing Museum. via China.org.cn angel-cat angel-cat2 angel-cat3 angel-cat4 angel-cat5

Water Color Paintings by Hitler

Did Adolf Hitler miss his true calling? Should he have dedicated his life to painting instead of wreaking havoc across Europe? You be the judge. These are only a few of the Fuhrer‘s “masterpieces”, another set was auctioned at the end of April and managed to raise close to $150,000. Experts say the paintings appear to be genuine, but they’re not quite impressed with Hitler’s work. In fact, the gennocidal dictator had a largely unsuccessful career as a painter, in his early days. Who knows, maybe it was frustration that lead him to ending millions of innocent lives. Fan of Adolf Hitler, are you? Well you’ll probably never afford one of his paintings, but you can at least buy yourself the Hitler action-figure, if you can find it. via Sina.com Forum hitler-paintings hitler-paintings2 hitler-paintings3 hitler-paintings4 hitler-paintings5 hitler-paintings6 hitler-paintings7 hitler-paintings8

Hello Kitty Castle

Finally, the world-famous Japanese character gets a proper home…in China. Now loyal Hello Kitty fans from around the world can start their pilgrimage to the Hello Kitty Castle that was inaugurated in Shanghai. Not much I can say about this place, it’s very pink and girly-like and, judging by the popularity of Hello Kitty, it might just become the new Mecca. One thing that would fit perfectly in the Hello Kitty Castle is the Hell-Kitty Rifle, an AR-15 rifle personalized by a Californian weapon enthusiast. via China.org.cn hello-kitty-castle hello-kitty-castle2 hello-kitty-castle3 hello-kitty-castle4 hello-kitty-castle5 hello-kitty-castle6 hello-kitty-castle7

China’s Kung Fu Soccer Team

Chinese discover deadly combination: soccer and Kung Fu martial arts. The first thing that came into my mind, when I first saw these photos, was the movie Shaolin Soccer. Ok, so it wasn’t the best film ever made, but it had a pretty cool idea, mixing a popular sport like soccer with martial arts. Now the Chinese bring fantasy into real life with the women’s kung fu soccer team. The kung fu soccer team was founded in Tanggu, and the girls showcased their abilities for the first time on May 31, in Tianjin. The Blonde Black Bear

Well, it’s not exactly the blonde we’re used to, but it’s as blonde as a black bear can get. Known as a Spirit Bear or Kermode Bear, this polar-bear look-alike was thought to exist only in Indian mythology. Brave photographer Steven Kazlowski took some photos of a Spirit Bear, an achievement considered impossible among wildlife photographers. 39-year-old Steven went through a one-one-one encounter with one of these great white beasts, but managed to escape with his life. It’s important to mention that Spirit Bears are not albino animals, they’re what you can call a blonde black bear. They are extremely rare creatures and because of extensive logging around coastal temperate rainforests, their habitat has shrunk even more. The Spira-Foam Car

It’s not very sexy, but it has a lot of other advantages conventional cars don’t. Invented by Lon Ballard, the Spira-Foam Car is made out of common motorcycle parts, covered by six inches of foam. It’s powered by a 110 cc scooter engine that returns 100 mpg, has a weight of just 320 lbs and reaches a top speed of 70 mph. Except for weight and fuel-consumption, the Spira-Foam Vehicle‘s specs don’t impress. But what’s most amazing about this strange car is it’s ability to function on both land and water. With the traffic nowadays you can just sail your way to work, if the surroundings allow it. Also, because of its spira-foam exterior, it offers a lot more protection in case of accidents. Sure, the Russian TREKOL did all this things, but I’m sure you’d go broke after a few refills. Ballard says he can build a Spira-Foam Car using the parts off any bike, and he will soon start mass producing his invention, in Thailand. I don’t know how expensive this wacky car will be, but if you won’t be able to afford it, you can also build yourself an amphibious bike. via Jalopnik spira-foam-car spira-foam-car2 spira-foam-car3 spira-foam-car4 spira-foam-car05 spira-foam-car6
