Yam King Contest Held in China

On November 25, a yam and taro contest crowned the largest yam of 2009, in South-West China. As one of the biggest yam and taro supplier in China, Anhe Township held the seventh annual Yam King Contest. Farmers from all around the area brought their biggest harvested yams hoping they’ll snatch the title of yam King 2009. The winner of the contest was a 1.66 meters-long yam that weighed 38 kilograms. I bet that’s big enough to feed the farmer’s whole family for a long time. via Xinhua yam-contest Read More »

Ed Bing Lee, a talented artist from Philadelphia, has been perfecting his knotting skills for the past 25 years and is now able to create practically anything using basic macrame knots. His “Delectables” series features some of the most delicious art pieces I’ve ever had the privilege of seeing. They may not be edible, but Ed Bing Lee’s knotted foods sure look good enough to eat. Delicious-Looking Edible Chocolate Couch

Entitled “You Can’t Have Your Cake and Eat It Too”, the chocolate couch was created by Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich for an art-exhibit appropriately named “Let Them Eat Art”. The chocolaty art-piece was covered in a thick layer of chocolate that not only made it look like a brown leather couch, but also feel like one. All the couch details, including buttons and stitching were made from chocolate. That chocolate couch looks so real I bet there was someone at the gallery door telling visitors not to sit on it. via mocoloco chocolate-couch Read More »

Love Dessert – A Viagra Enhanced Sweet Delight

Students from a Colombian cooking school presented their unusual “love dessert” at the Gastronomy 2009 culinary show, in Bogota. The special pudding contains dissolved Viagra, passion-fruit and is garnished with whipped-cream and chocolate. The students, aged between 17 and 23, found a way to safely dissolve the magic blue pill in their dessert and create a new, sweet aphrodisiac. They say their recipe contains detailed instructions on how to dissolve the pill. Because Viagra is a prescription drug, the Love Dessert can’t yet be sold, but once Colombia’s food and drug institute concludes its analysis of the dessert, you may find it in cafes and restaurants near you. Enjoy and make sure to wear baggy trousers. Photos by William Fernando Martinez / AP via IBN Live Colombia Viagra Dessert Read More »

The Sweetest Star-Wars Imperial Walker

I’m not a big Star-Wars fan, but I’ve got to say this Imperial Walker looks good enough to eat. But who could muster the courage to take the first bite and ruin such a culinary masterpiece? I mean look at this thing, it looks almost just like the real thing and it even has that ship wrapping a cable around its legs, just like in the Star-Wars movie. There’s no question this frosting-covered Imperial Walker cake looks bad-ass, but I can’t help wonder what it tastes like? And is there a chance a stormtrooper could get stuck between your teeth? Hmm… via Geekstir star-wars-cake Read More »

Are you one of those people that goes “om nom nom” every time they think about bacon? Well, then you’re going to love this bacon jam. Cooked by Not Quite Nigella from… Not Quite Nigella, the bacon jam is actually cooked double smoked bacon passed through the food processor. From what I read, the cook was quite pleased with the jam. You’ll probably have a tough time finding a jar of bacon jam at the department store, but if you don’t feel like cooking, try a piece of bacon chocolate instead. Bacon-jam Read More »

Chinese Farmer Grows Buddha-Shaped Pears

Gao Xianzhang has managed to create what some would call the holiest fruits ever, pears shaped like Buddha. Gao has been working on his pear-growing technique for six years and this season he managed to grow 10,000 Buddha-shaped baby pears. Each fruit is grown in an intricate Buddha mould and ends up looking like a juicy figurine. The ingenious farmer says the locals in his home village of Hexia, norther China, have been buying his Buddha pears as soon as he picks them from the trees. Most of them think they are cute and that they bring good luck. Gao Xianzhang pears aren’t cheap, roughly $1.8 each, but their success in China convinced him to start exporting them into Europe. A Real-Life Scorpion King

Suang Puangsri, a 38-year-old man from Thailand lives in perfect harmony with his 4,600 pet scorpions. Scorpions, grasshoppers, locusts and other insects are considered delicacies in Thailand and Suang Puangsri has been eating them for the last 10 years. To atone for this “crime” he has adapted his home in Uttaradit province, 600 km north of Bangkok, to live with 4,600 dangerous scorpions. He feeds them and cares to their every need and ultimately releases them in their natural habitat, in the forests of Uttaradit. As you can see in the images, he has no problem with his creepy pets crawling all over his body and even in his mouth. Inspired by his scorpion pets, Suang makes insect figurines out of seeds and branches. Photos by Reuters via Yahoo weird-pets Read More »

Fire-Up That V8

Having your engine die-out on you can be a real tragedy, but knowing you can turn it into a kick-ass grill can make things a lot better. Trent Whatley had the idea of an engine grill cooking-up in his head for about two years, but due to lack of time and parts he kept putting it on the back burner. One day he did an internet search on the subject and found cars turned into grills and grills powered by car-engines, but nothing like what he was about to build. With the help of his neighbor, Terry Bacon, they started turning a small block Chevy V8 engine into a mean grilling machine. Pimped-out with a nice flaming paint-job and killer valve covers, Trent Whatley’s V8 Engine Grill managed to capture the attention of everyone at a local car-show. And here I was thinking the washing-machine grill or the Death-Star Grill were as cool as grills get. This thing is way out of their league. via Jalopnik v8-grill v8-grill2 v8-grill3 v8-grill4 v8-grill5 v8-grill6 v8-grill7 v8-grill8 v8-grill9 v8-grill10 v8-grill11

La Tomatina – Biggest Food Fight in Colombia

What started as La Tomatina of Bunol, Spain, is now also a popular celebration in Sutamarchan, Colombia and even Dongguan, China. On June 14, locals of Sutamarchan and many tourists gathered on an old football field to stage Colombia’s biggest food fight of the year. Around 15 tons of tomatoes were sacrificed in La Tomatina this year. The food fight, inspired by the much more famous Tomatina of Bunol, is part of a three day tomato celebration. A tomato-eating contest and a competition for the largest tomato, are also part of the celebration. via Telegraph.co.uk la-tomatina-colombia la-tomatina-colombia2 la-tomatina-colombia3 la-tomatina-colombia4 la-tomatina-colombia5 la-tomatina-colombia6 la-tomatina-colombia7 la-tomatina-colombia8 la-tomatina-colombia9

Edible Dough Hat

Now here’s one fashion accessory the world’s fattest man, or the world’s fattest athlete would just love to have. I tried tracing these photos to the original source to get more info, but got nowhere. I found them on a Russian photo site, but judging by the ingredients used, this tasty hat wasn’t made in Russia. Anyway, even though I wasn’t able to get any information about this edible hat, the photos pretty much speak for themselves. Congratulations to the designer/baker on a job well done! If anyone recognizes the photos, please leave a link to the original source in a comment, so I can credit the work. edible-hat0 edible-hat2 edible-hat3 edible-hat4 edible-hat5 edible-hat6 edible-hat7 edible-hat8 edible-hat9 edible-hat10

Home-Made Washing Machine Grill

What can you do with a broken washing machine? Normally just drag it out of the house and dump it somewhere for the garbage-men to pick up. But not if you need a grill… Finally a way to put that old washing machine to good use and get some nice burgers out of it. Just look at this do-it-yourself grill I found, it’s practical and very easy to build. just go out in your backyard, tear your dirty old washing machine appart and just keep the metal drum. Honey Baked Ham Cupcakes

Sweets keep getting weirder and weirder these days. After the bacon-flavored chocolate, I present to you the honey baked ham cupcakes. Stef, from the Cupcake Project blog, has baked what she says is the world’s first honey baked ham cupcake. Those who tried these weird delicacies said they couldn’t really taste the ham, if anything it just gives the cupcake a nice sweet-salty flavor. In fact, the ham only acts as an edible cupcake wrapping, through which you have to bite your way to the tasty cinnamon cream cheese frosting. If you want to try these at home, just visit Cupcake Project page and check the recipe. honey-baked-ham-cupcakes honey-baked-ham-cupcakes2 honey-baked-ham-cupcakes3 honey-baked-ham-cupcakes4 honey-baked-ham-cupcakes5

Juicy Thai delicacies

For some reason I never thought I’d use the word delicacy in the same sentence with words like cricket, caterpillar, frog, grasshopper, but I guess I was wrong. Apparently in Thailand all these are considered delicious and extremely good for the body. Grasshoppers are boiled alive so they keep their physical detail intact, but you shouldn’t eat the head and intestines…charming. If you’re into this stuff, you might be thrilled to hear you could also try some roaches, beetles, ants, ant eggs and even cooked scorpions.
