What Coca-Cola Does to Your Stomach

There has been a lot of speculation about the effect of Coca Cola on the human stomach. There were those that said that the popular beverage could literally cause our intestines to melt if we drink to much of the stuff. Coca Cola always denied the rumors and said that their product is no worse than other soft drinks on the market and there was no official proof of the “dissolving effect“.

So a bunch of guys decided to conduct their own experiment and find out if the rumors are true. They just took a piece of red meat, put it in a plate and poured some Coca Cola over it. They left it there for two days and took some photos throughout their experiment. The Coke didn’t completely dissolve the meat but you can see that it doesn’t look like anything you’d like to have inside your body. And the smell was unbearable.

I’m sure pretty much everyone knew  that Coca Cola wasn’t the healthiest drink on the market, but I for one didn’t think it could do that to flesh. No more Coke for me!

Yeah, well stomach acid will do that to meat too, and your stomach is already full of that. Just because something is bad for a plate of meat doesn’t mean it’s bad for your stomach.

That said, soda does have a lot of sugar in it, so it’s probably best to drink beer instead.

  2. mitch says:

Ummm, was there a control? Does this mimic internal conditions? Do I need to explain how bad of an experiment this is?

  3. Jonny says:

well since the stomach is lined to deal with pH2 acid (think battery acid), i reckon it can handle coke.

do some research on the digestive system, i think you’ll find it can handle a lot worse(granted soft drinks arent good for you in the first place though)

  4. Knute says:

I’ve also read that the acid (phosphoric et al) blocks the absorption of calcium in the body. As always the rule should be moderation in all things …

  5. Ema Nymton says:

Because beer doesn’t contain any form of sugar at all *cough* :d hmm beeeeer

  6. Nikki says:

What other meats could you use to experiment this?

  7. Everything these days seems bad for you.

In my opinion whatever it is that you eat or drink, do it in moderation.

  8. Gunnar says:

If you really wanted to test it you should have had other plates of meat sitting in other liquids such as water and other sodas to compare the results. Obviously letting some raw meat fester in a bowl of liquid for 2 days isnt going to look good and of course it’s going to smell bad, regardless if its in coke or not.

  9. J says:

The smell could be attributed to the fact that you left raw meat out for a couple of days. With or without Coca-Cola, it’s gonna be rank pretty soon.

  10. Joeof says:

The body processes coke not the other way around. Dumb experiment.

  11. anonymous says:

yeah let’s see what coca coal will do to a stomach by using a piece of meat instead of say something remotely similar like a pigs stomach….are you so daft that you don’t realize that the stomach has a lining with mucus producing membranes that specifically protect the integrity of the stomach from more damaging and stronger acids than those found in coca cola…like say HCL? :P

  12. benny says:

    Very very dumb experiment.

  13. Matt M. says:

well, i agree that the way it was conducted did not show its potential, but if u were to have multiple experiments with the meat using multiple acid based liquids it would have a more signifigant

  14. K.T. says:

I agree with Mitch. Of coarse is going to get smelly! Bad experiment. I agree with peter. Just drink beer or something instead

  15. Cyn says:

I tried to convince my friends that Coke is not the best choice to drink, but I had no luck. I know Coca Cola has to hurt your inner workings, I just don’t know how it does it. No more Coke or Diet Coke for me and I so addicted; I do love it!

    You’re halarious!! Love it!

  17. cow says:

soda does not stay in your stomach for 2 days its not acurate

  18. hitman1 says:

This is not what coke does to your stomach, it’s what coke does to a piece of meat on a plate. Funny experiment though, thanks for posting. :D

  19. Weirdo says:

you only tested one type of soda so you can’t really have proof that coco cola has more acid and is bader for you. you should take three types of soda and what ever meat desolves frist is the one with the most acid

  20. gavin says:

for one coke doesnt stay in your body system for more than 3 hours, its usually urinated straight out and the sugar absorbed by the body, by the time the acidity reaches the stomach it is almost flat, so its considered neutral, its the sugar content that forms the acidity so guess what people, your experiment actually sucks because you cant create a virtual experiment without the exact body temperature and absorbancy as real life.

  21. scienceismysubject says:

    that wasnt even an experiment

  22. Cheekii says:

Meanwhile, I’m sure Coke has plenty of uses as a marinade sauce or meat tenderiser… Because as already said, that’s about the only thing this “experiment” proves.

  23. lola says:

well i think thats this a good project forget about what others thinks they’re just hatin

  24. mitch this experiment is true so why are you talking…
just because you havent tried this experiment, doesnt mean its not true
ive tried it and it works thank you very much MITCH!!!

  25. [...] [...]

  26. Sue says:

    you’re just an old drunk

  27. Peps says:

Not only can your stomach handle acids way worse than Coke, but it doesn’t retain Coke for two days! Congratulations, you failed to realize how often you go to the bathroom.

  28. Julie says:

As people already mentioned our stomach pH is already much higher than that of Cola. If people want to be concerned it should be the effect of acid to the lining of the mouth and esophagus, and the enamel on our teeth which are not as well equipped for extremes of any sort. Think about how it feels after something really salty, or acidic, etc.

  29. Julie says:

Sorry correction, pH is lower in the stomach, more acidic. I mispoke.

  30. Bear says:

Hmmmmmm not enough prove for a start u didnt try hard enough u just put some coke cola on some raw meat and left it there for 2days not enough prove as far as im concerned in the future ur better off doin more reserch instead of saying that wat people see is fact when it dosent prove anything u need to do more research before u come out saying that raw meat on a plate was disolved by coke cola not enougn prove or evidence
