What Coca-Cola Does to Your Stomach

There has been a lot of speculation about the effect of Coca Cola on the human stomach. There were those that said that the popular beverage could literally cause our intestines to melt if we drink to much of the stuff. Coca Cola always denied the rumors and said that their product is no worse than other soft drinks on the market and there was no official proof of the “dissolving effect“.

So a bunch of guys decided to conduct their own experiment and find out if the rumors are true. They just took a piece of red meat, put it in a plate and poured some Coca Cola over it. They left it there for two days and took some photos throughout their experiment. The Coke didn’t completely dissolve the meat but you can see that it doesn’t look like anything you’d like to have inside your body. And the smell was unbearable.

I’m sure pretty much everyone knew  that Coca Cola wasn’t the healthiest drink on the market, but I for one didn’t think it could do that to flesh. No more Coke for me!

Yeah, well stomach acid will do that to meat too, and your stomach is already full of that. Just because something is bad for a plate of meat doesn’t mean it’s bad for your stomach.

That said, soda does have a lot of sugar in it, so it’s probably best to drink beer instead.

  • mitch Posted on October 2, 2008

Ummm, was there a control? Does this mimic internal conditions? Do I need to explain how bad of an experiment this is?

  • Jonny Posted on October 2, 2008

well since the stomach is lined to deal with pH2 acid (think battery acid), i reckon it can handle coke.

do some research on the digestive system, i think you’ll find it can handle a lot worse(granted soft drinks arent good for you in the first place though)

  • Knute Posted on October 2, 2008

I’ve also read that the acid (phosphoric et al) blocks the absorption of calcium in the body. As always the rule should be moderation in all things …

  • Ema Nymton Posted on October 2, 2008

Because beer doesn’t contain any form of sugar at all *cough* :d hmm beeeeer

  • Nikki Posted on October 2, 2008

What other meats could you use to experiment this?

  • Gunnar Posted on October 2, 2008

If you really wanted to test it you should have had other plates of meat sitting in other liquids such as water and other sodas to compare the results. Obviously letting some raw meat fester in a bowl of liquid for 2 days isnt going to look good and of course it’s going to smell bad, regardless if its in coke or not.

  • J Posted on October 2, 2008

The smell could be attributed to the fact that you left raw meat out for a couple of days. With or without Coca-Cola, it’s gonna be rank pretty soon.

  • Joeof Posted on October 2, 2008

The body processes coke not the other way around. Dumb experiment.

  • anonymous Posted on October 3, 2008

yeah let’s see what coca coal will do to a stomach by using a piece of meat instead of say something remotely similar like a pigs stomach….are you so daft that you don’t realize that the stomach has a lining with mucus producing membranes that specifically protect the integrity of the stomach from more damaging and stronger acids than those found in coca cola…like say HCL? :P

  • benny Posted on October 3, 2008

    Very very dumb experiment.

  • Matt M. Posted on October 7, 2008

well, i agree that the way it was conducted did not show its potential, but if u were to have multiple experiments with the meat using multiple acid based liquids it would have a more signifigant

  • K.T. Posted on October 26, 2008

I agree with Mitch. Of coarse is going to get smelly! Bad experiment. I agree with peter. Just drink beer or something instead

  • Cyn Posted on November 3, 2008

I tried to convince my friends that Coke is not the best choice to drink, but I had no luck. I know Coca Cola has to hurt your inner workings, I just don’t know how it does it. No more Coke or Diet Coke for me and I so addicted; I do love it!

    You’re halarious!! Love it!

soda does not stay in your stomach for 2 days its not acurate

  • hitman1 Posted on December 19, 2008

This is not what coke does to your stomach, it’s what coke does to a piece of meat on a plate. Funny experiment though, thanks for posting. :D

  • Weirdo Posted on February 1, 2009

you only tested one type of soda so you can’t really have proof that coco cola has more acid and is bader for you. you should take three types of soda and what ever meat desolves frist is the one with the most acid

  • gavin Posted on February 18, 2009

for one coke doesnt stay in your body system for more than 3 hours, its usually urinated straight out and the sugar absorbed by the body, by the time the acidity reaches the stomach it is almost flat, so its considered neutral, its the sugar content that forms the acidity so guess what people, your experiment actually sucks because you cant create a virtual experiment without the exact body temperature and absorbancy as real life.

  • scienceismysubject Posted on April 5, 2009

    that wasnt even an experiment

  • Cheekii Posted on April 7, 2009

Meanwhile, I’m sure Coke has plenty of uses as a marinade sauce or meat tenderiser… Because as already said, that’s about the only thing this “experiment” proves.

  • lola Posted on April 16, 2009

well i think thats this a good project forget about what others thinks they’re just hatin

  • (^%$Lorena$%^) Posted on April 30, 2009

mitch this experiment is true so why are you talking…
just because you havent tried this experiment, doesnt mean its not true
ive tried it and it works thank you very much MITCH!!!

  • Sue Posted on August 12, 2009

    you’re just an old drunk

  • Peps Posted on September 15, 2009

Not only can your stomach handle acids way worse than Coke, but it doesn’t retain Coke for two days! Congratulations, you failed to realize how often you go to the bathroom.

  • Julie Posted on September 30, 2009

As people already mentioned our stomach pH is already much higher than that of Cola. If people want to be concerned it should be the effect of acid to the lining of the mouth and esophagus, and the enamel on our teeth which are not as well equipped for extremes of any sort. Think about how it feels after something really salty, or acidic, etc.

  • Julie Posted on September 30, 2009

Sorry correction, pH is lower in the stomach, more acidic. I mispoke.

  • Bear Posted on November 13, 2009

Hmmmmmm not enough prove for a start u didnt try hard enough u just put some coke cola on some raw meat and left it there for 2days not enough prove as far as im concerned in the future ur better off doin more reserch instead of saying that wat people see is fact when it dosent prove anything u need to do more research before u come out saying that raw meat on a plate was disolved by coke cola not enougn prove or evidence

    Retarded.

  • ??? Posted on January 15, 2010

    This webpage makes Science cry

  • anonimous Posted on February 15, 2010

this is really fucking retarded there is no damn proof thta coka does that to your stomach

  • Rick Posted on March 15, 2010

Well now I have seen it all. i agree to many cokes may not be good for us. But this experiment is way off base. Our stomachs have acid in them. has to have acid to digest food. Adding more acid is not a bad thing. people who get douadnel ulcers usually have to little acid in there stomachs. So the acid has to secrete through the stomach lining to get into the stomach. This experiment is way off. You could do the same thing to the red meat by pouring hydrocloric acid on it. And that is what is in our stomachs!!!

  • BillyBob Posted on May 19, 2010

I accidently left a piece of meat in my car's trunk for only a couple hours. It did the same thing without the soda. Appears the experiment was conducted wrong. I drank a coke before my annual checkup. I told my doctor and he couldn't have cared less. Therefore Doctors don't care. About the same results as your experiment.

coca only stays in the stomach for three to six ours max. That expiriment lasted two days.

  • Tim Posted on September 2, 2010

Awesome ! now after I eat meat I will always drink cola and let it do the digesting for me… thanks for the info !!!! :) Nice experiment though…

  • dante Posted on October 6, 2010

well i liked this experement… i did it for school and i got an A thanks:)

  • Ken Posted on January 28, 2011

That would have happened to the meat WITHOUT the coke !

  • Butters Posted on February 7, 2011

I missed the bit where they simulate the stomach.

  • sexi-lexi-ya-digg Posted on February 8, 2011

Hello this expermint can suck it i did this for my science fair and got a f thanks really thanks:-]

  • lolwut Posted on March 28, 2011

I knew people were dumb but goddamn. Food does not remain in your stomach for 2 days. If you are too stupid to understand why this experiment fails, you do not deserve to drink any coke.

  • David Posted on April 12, 2011

if coke does this 2 meat just imagine wat it can do to your inside ewwwww

  • Siddarth Posted on May 14, 2011

well thats dead meat….Our stomach is alive and kicking…..With that stupid experiment you just created a new dish!!!!….I hope u ate it up!

  • Someone Posted on May 30, 2011

really? you believe this shit? HAHAHAHAHAA! watch some freaking Mythbusters, dopes! they’ve covered why this experiment is a BAD EXAMPLE. It does not simulate conditions in the stomach any better than throwing it in the fridge, or wrapping it up in a bag would.

as long as you keep your mouth clean after, soda shouldn’t have any lasting effect on you. Diuretic effects have been scientifically proven that they are less effective the more often you drink the stuff. And as for leaching calcium, yeah, maybe, if you’re not ingesting enough calcium rich-foods or supplements. There are ways to cope with every diet issue, obviously 9_9

  • Dale Stark Posted on June 1, 2011

No offense to the guys who did this expirament but… your a bunch of Fxxkin gypsies lol jk. But Really? The acid in your stomach could melt through a wooden floor (if there was enough of it on the floor of course but idk how that would happen) But anyway the acid in your stomach nutralizes the acid in the Coke so it poses no threat to you in any way besides the sugar and caffein in it (which doesnt really effect you if your under the age of 30 and get enough calcium into your body) So Coke/Pepsi doesnt do anything to your stomach acid because your stomach acid is a bad @ss and nutralizes it :) This artical has been placed here by the courtousy of: -> The Truth <-

  • tiara Posted on July 1, 2011

I know this experiment is to do with what coke does to the stomach, but has anyone thought of what it does to the teeth? Well, dentists, obviously, have, and they’re saying it causes tooth erosion and sensitivity if consumed regularly. It softens the enamel of the tooth and makes it vulnerable to any grinding action in which teeth are involved (and they are so in the process of chewing and tooth grinding at night). Plus if you brush your teeth straight after having coke you presumably remove tiny particles of enamel. Just some food for thought

  • Verolicious! Posted on September 14, 2011

That experiment makes laugh a lot because the is no such thing and anyway that meat was already rotten, thanks guys u won an award for the joke of the year.lol

  • Koming Posted on September 29, 2011

I´m pretty sure that this example would look almost the same with plain mineral water and that slice of carpaccio.

That´s plain stupid, does anyone knows what science is before trying such dumb experiment? Any slice of meat after 2 days would smell terrible, even on air (unless special climatic enviroments for making dried meat). Won´t drink water anymore then as well.
