A Chengdu man reported that his wife developed depression and anxiety after being seen naked by two window cleaners at their high-end apartment in the Chinese city.
The bizarre incident occurred back in April, but the man, identified only as Mr. Cheng by the media, claims that his wife has been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. He and his wife rented a high-rise apartment in a luxury apartment complex in Chengdu, China’s Sichuan province, for 10,000 yuan (approximately $1,390) a month and specifically told management to notify them before the exterior glass walls were cleaned. Mr Cheng claims he made his request about being notified to the building’s front desk, to the housekeeper, and even on the building group chat, but one morning, two workers suddenly appeared outside their bedroom window, startling his wife as she slept naked.

“It’s been almost four months now, and the doctor diagnosed her with depression and anxiety,” Mr. Cheng complained online. “I’ve demanded a public apology and a reasonable compensation package from the apartment management, but they’ve refused. Except for the initial demand for accountability when the incident occurred, when they sent someone to our house with fruit to apologize, they haven’t expressed any concern for my wife’s depression in over three months.”
Mrs. Cheng was apparently sleeping naked in her bed, without the curtains closed, when the two window cleaners appeared and saw her, which was so shocking and degrading that she went into a depression. Now, the couple is asking for some sort of compensation from the building management, but all they have been offered so far is a 600 yuan discount on their next lease contract. Considering they pay 10,000 yuan per month, the Chengs weren’t too thrilled with the offer.
The case sparked a heated online debate on Chinese social media, with some people blaming the property management for not informing residents before window cleaning operations, and others putting the blame on the woman for sleeping with the curtains open. One person even joked that she put the cleaners in danger as the shock could have caused them to plummet to their deaths.
