Originally reported by the popular Telegram channel BAZA, the unusual incident occurred during a corporate party at the “Igra Stolov” culinary studio in Moscow, where a hired mixologist tried to impress the attending guests by chilling his cocktails with liquid nitrogen. Apart from rapidly cooling the drinks, the nitrogen also created a cool visual effect by evaporating as a thick mist.
While liquid nitrogen is a cool gimmick in cocktail making, the drinks can only be consumed after the nitrogen has evaporated completely, something that the mixologist failed to inform his audience about. The now-viral video shows the unnamed man waiting for his drink, and then drinking it from a paper cup, only to instantly blow out nitrogen fumes and recoil in pain.
The clip shared by BAZA cuts off after the arrival of the paramedics, but Russian news outlet Lenta confirmed that the 38-year-old man suffered a ruptured stomach as a result of ingesting the cocktail and required surgery to repair the damage. The man has since been stabilized, but the severity of his condition is still unknown.
A similar case reportedly occurred earlier this year in St. Petersburg, where a 23-year-old Russian woman drank a soda laced with liquid nitrogen. As a result, she was diagnosed with an esophageal burn.
