Spanish Gym Offers Naked Workouts

A gym in Spain’s Basque region has begun offering naked workouts, in order to beat the economic recession.

When Merche Laseca, owner of the Easy Gym, in Arrigorriaga, noticed fewer people were attending his gym because of the crisis, he knew he had to come up with something new to keep his business afloat. He did some research and discovered the area was a popular destination for naturists. In fact, two local swimming pools were already offering popular monthly nude swimming sessions, and since he discovered there are at least 12 nudist beached in the Basque region, and a mass naked run organized yearly in the nearby town of Sopelana, he figured a naturist gym wasn’t a bad idea.

“We’re always interested in new activities” and “doing sports without clothes is natural and much more comfy” argues Maite Vicuna, president of the Basque Naturist Association, but there are skeptics who are less than thrilled with the idea of a nudist gym. They claim clothes are important when working out, as they retain most of the sweat, whereas doing it naked means the swat goes on the machines, the floor and even on the people around you.

Despite the optimistic results of the results, only four naturists showed up at the Easy Gym nude sessions inauguration, a rather disappointing outcome, as Ms. Laseca herself admits. But the gym will still operate as a naturist facility every Saturday afternoon and all Sunday.

Do companies really have only one thing left to attract people – just offer them to get naked?

First there was naked golf club, then naked web designer, and now this naked gym… what is going on in the world?

I really wonder why people are surprised by this? Here is some interesting facts many apparently do not know, including the author here.

Gymnasium is in Greek, a place to exercise naked. Gymnos is a Greek word for the naked body. They exercise and use communal baths all naked. Rome was doing the same and so were many of the surrounding communities.

Gymnophobia, which most of Americans seem to have, is a fear of the naked body.

So next time you want to go to the gym or gymnasium, remember, it was originally a place to exercise naked!

And don’t forget the Olympics folks. It too was created by the likes of Greeks and Rome and they were all performed mostly naked. That is why the Apostle Paul wrote about taking off the weight that slows us down spiritually. Hebrews 12:1″Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” He was implying the local tradition of running naked.

So don’t be surprised. Besides, it’s cleaner and healthier anyway. No smelly, sweaty clothes. Anyone interested in saving water and resources? Check out the article “Ecologically Sound” at
