Man Decorates His Entire Basement Using a Sharpie and a Marker

53-year-old Says Kratzer managed to turn his boring cream-painted basement into an inhabitable masterpiece, by using his trusty sharpie and a magic marker.

Mister Kratzer has always been fascinated by Impressionist art, and by the time he reached 30, he knew he wanted his house to be decorated with it. Since he couldn’t afford to buy all the art pieces he began creating them himself. He began painting, and now his works hang all over the house. So when he decided to redecorate the basement, it’s not very hard to guess what style he used as inspiration.

A lawyer by day, Mr. Kratzer spent whatever free time he had, decorating the walls of his basement with the heroes that fascinated him throughout his entire life. And he did it all with just $12 worth of sharpie and a magic marker. You’ll find famous detectives Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes lounging with George Bernard Shaw, the Marx Brothers peering around the corner, cartoon stars Rocky and Bullwinkle, and a top garbage can painted into R2D2.

Other wives might be furious at their husbands, after seeing their basements covered with all kinds of sharpie doodles, but here’s what Deb Kratzer had to say: “I have the coolest husband. He’s so bright, and artistic on top of it.”

    Looks like crap

  • LOL Posted on March 22, 2011

My blind and deaf grandmother who died last year could’ve done a better job.

  • Laniius Posted on March 25, 2011

Ignore the obvious trolls being obvious. It looks brilliant.

  • Eric Posted on March 26, 2011

Wish my parents saw me this way whenever I drew on the walls as a kid…

  • Anon Posted on March 26, 2011

Truthfully? It’s a LOT more tasteful than I thought it would be. Don’t want it in my house, but it’s his house and he can do what he wants.

Alright all you people that have no imagination! That guy is really creative and artistic. I think what he did is really neat looking.

  • Liss Posted on March 28, 2011

It looks cool, but all the sharpie must make the room stink!

  • Amanda Posted on March 28, 2011

I thought this was really neat. I was expecting it to be colored in for some reason. I especially like the R2D2 trashcan accenting in the last photo. 😉 But truly, very interesting!

  • appreciateit Posted on March 29, 2011

you guys are douche bags. If your grandmother can do it, why don’t you try and best it? and ofcourse a lame answer is to follow….”I’m not going to be it because…because…” ..Shut up, your a bitch, that why

    Good work on this.

  • Irene Posted on March 29, 2011

The only thing I’d change is colour, but I guess that’s personal opinion (and that it’s hard to be cheap with colour). But I think it’s amazing, and I actually would have it in my house. Again – with colour.

I liked it a lot. On top of decorating brilliantly he also has awesome stuff! Total man cave.

  • Stacey Posted on March 30, 2011

It certainly took a lot of time and patience. I personally would have had a bit more colour for my liking.

  • thousandlegger Posted on April 1, 2011

a sharpie IS a marker. wtf?

  • Framtonm Posted on April 1, 2011

I think it’s a bloody great achievement! Well Done.

  • Phil E. Drifter Posted on April 4, 2011

Looks like he bought a lot more than just a sharpie and a marker…

  • Carlie Posted on April 7, 2011

wouldn’t that have sucked if he made a mistake?

  • Don Posted on April 11, 2011

Looks like the results of a week long meth binge to me :/
It doesn’t look bad, just kinda …. meh

  • Elena Posted on April 14, 2011

I would like my basement walls like that.

  • jude Posted on April 16, 2011

I was expecting alot of color rather blah but still cool………

  • Momzilla Posted on April 17, 2011

Just think of the person who is going to try to paint over that. I bet it takes 2 undercoats and 2 coats of regular paint.
Sharpie will bleed through like a mo-fo; personal experience.

  • John Posted on April 21, 2011

This was clearly done with a Bic, not a Sharpie or marker. I can tell by the ink.

  • zach Posted on April 26, 2011

Ha! If your grandmother was ACTUALLY any good, she’d STILL be able to beat this buy. Being deceased is no justification for laziness.

  • fred Posted on April 26, 2011

    looks like shit…

  • Eliza Posted on May 2, 2011

I really like it as an artistic piece. As a legitimate wall decoration, I think it lacks a lot of dimension. His choice to draw everything in a sketchy style makes this fun and whimsical, but it does nothing to draw from the fact that it is still a blank wall in a small, confined basement. A mirror or some shading could have gone a long way.

And I love love LOVE how he traced the molding on the fireplace, bookshelf, etc.

  • Alicia Posted on May 28, 2011

My personal opinion?! I don’t think the walls need the color added. I think it really makes the furniture really stand out the way it is. Doing something different surely takes away from ordinary.

  • Beth Posted on June 25, 2011

Fascinating, very very cool…. I love it.

  • markmeds Posted on August 12, 2011

Amazing it took talent and perserverence regardless of whether it is your cup of tea I have to think the foul languaged two year old comments are likely made by people that have dismal existences.

  • Nathan Posted on August 12, 2011

The best part is the R2-D2 trashcan in the background of the last picture.

  • alex Posted on August 12, 2011

that is the dopest shit!!!! i would totally do that to my whole house. R2D2 trash can in last picture FOR THE WIN.

  • Lisa Posted on September 17, 2011

I think it looks just wonderful. Such a fantastic idea; just a sharpie to decorate your walls. The design has something ‘New Yorker’ about them.

  • Lantana Posted on November 13, 2011

It just has to be your taste. The guy’s obviously not an idiot. He’s a lawyer and for chrissakes look at the house. That’s his BASEMENT! I’d love to see the upstairs. Personally I think the basement project is a good diversion that’s at least positive. He could be sitting around drinking a fifth of scotch a night. Wait, maybe he was…never mind.

  • val Posted on December 1, 2011

I think it looks great. He has quite an imagination and should consider becoming an artist in his next career. Why are people so rude about comments when they can hide behind a computer screen.

  • Gman Posted on January 24, 2012

    Taaaaaaaaaake oooonnnnn meeeeeeeeeeeee

  • herbert Posted on March 20, 2012

wish he could draw all that ugly furniture away and replace it with nice new white furniture instead.
