Don’t look at the photos and video if you’re a big animal lover, it’s “a little” hard to take in…

This “bay of blood” set somewhere in the Faroe Islands is where hundreds, sometimes thousands of pilot whales are literally butchered alive by hungry locals. The hunt known as Grindadrap is centuries old and it hasn’t changed much since then, except for the power-boats, radios and echo-sounders which make life a lot easier for the butchers. They round the poor whales into the shore with the power-boats and when they get really close, the locals plunge into the waves and start hooking them to death in a horrific manner. Then they drag the carcasses to shore and start skinning them and splitting the meat and blubber between all the islands’ inhabitants.

The Faroes economy relies only on economic fishing, but that doesn’t give them the right to slaughter 544 Atlantic white sided dolphins in a single day, like they did in 1988.

recently, studies have shown that the meat and blubber of pilot whales contain high amounts of mercury, PCBs, DDT and dieldrin. For what they do every year these animals deserve to get much more than mercury poisoning.

Most of the participants in this crime seem to be radicals.
No real person would be limited, if this crime is prohibited by the Commission of the EU.

Hmmmm…..it seems to me that you write down your feelings without considering the facts.
If the topic is “it is fair to eat animals or not?” I could understand your comments, but since the question is different, I don’t understand at all.
If you eat or have eaten some kind of meat, you can shut the fuck up immediately. I guess that more than 544 animals are killed in a small town abbatoir daily. Multiply this figure for the working days in a year, and multiply it for the number of abbatoirs in USA, and ask yourself if it is intelligent to accuse those people of murder, or not.

P.S. The Faroese kill annually a maximum of 950 animals. If you have some figure of the animals (fish, cattle, and so on) killed annually in the US, publish it! It will be interesting to make the comparison.

In New Zealand when there are lots of whales stuck in a bay we all get in the water and gently help them back out to sea. Sometimes the dolphins help us too.

Just some feedback for some of these comments.

NorwegianViking - its not about being a form of food. Its a fact of humane killing. Why do we have to eat every single living thing? Why do you feel we must kill everything bar a human? why do we have more right over them? are you going to argue the usual we are smarter than them BS? Claim that all you like - they speak another launguage we do not understand.
So are we going to kill every single chinese person because they look different and speak a language we cannot comprehend.

These animals are smarter than any of us dumbass human beings will ever be.
they know TRUE survival. we just know how to wipe everything out and invade everything to the point of destroying it.

IS that what we are afraid of? the fact that something is in actual fact smarter than us.
See past your own egotistical mirror.
If people are to claim that animals are dumb then my god there are millions and millions of dumb humans in this world, do we kill them?
You have no heart and no sould to lay claim that this is justified by the fact that we must eat everything.

Really really sad and I am someone who can preach that killing an animal for consumption is cruel.
I have been a vegeterian all my life and I know that I am not contributing to the slaughter of millions of animals around the world whether its deamed humane or not.
People who kill like this are really mentally disturbed.

These animals have families and a connection to each other just as we do, imagine if that were your family being slaughtered and left to bleed to death in their own home.

speaking as a vegetarian… who cares?

I mean, honestly, I like whales as much as the next guy, but don’t waste your time with this. A few thousands are killed every year globally out of a healthy population of probably millions. At least they’re being hunted rather than raised like penned cattle for cold industrial slaughter. And some of you guys are saying that these hunters deserve death? Hypocrites.

Go worry about something useful, like the millions of people starving to death because our society eats too much beef, has too many kids, and screws up the economy of developing nations.

This may seem cruel but the meat is going to good use and very little goes to waste. Man is not above the food chain. Also this method of fishing is much better for the ecosystem than dragging nets along the bottom of the ocean.

Let me start with the basics:
I am Faroese, I live in the Faroe Islands.

“This “bay of blood” set somewhere in the Faroe Islands is where hundreds, sometimes thousands of pilot whales are literally butchered alive by hungry locals.”
    - Hundreds through a whole year yes, but not thousands, I have never yet, seen or heard of the number 1000 whales killed. Also the whales are not butchered, the ways of killing them has been changed, and there are now certain ways that are allowed in killing them. These rules are fairly new, and are made to make the time for the whale to die as short as at all possible.

“The hunt known as Grindadrap is centuries old and it hasn’t changed much since then, except for the power-boats, radios and echo-sounders which make life a lot easier for the butchers. They round the poor whales into the shore with the power-boats and when they get really close, the locals plunge into the waves and start hooking them to death in a horrific manner.”
    - Yes, the Grindadráp is centuries old.
    - Yes, the boats have gotten radios and echo-sounders
    - But did you know, that not one person or boat in the Faroes sails around to find these whales? When a boat or a person by chance sees whales within the islands, a message is sent that there is grind there and there. If there has been a certain amount of Grindadráp in that area that year, the whales are hunted out of the bay, and not in it. If you don’t believe me, then check the facts.

“Then they drag the carcasses to shore and start skinning them and splitting the meat and blubber between all the islands’ inhabitants.”
    - Yes, we do share the meat. It is also being shared to hospitals, elderly homes, and every inhabitant, not just rich ones, that could by it, but everyone. No one sells the whale meat, it is being given, a tradition from centuries ago, you could almost call it solidarity between the inhabitants.

“The Faroes economy relies only on economic fishing, but that doesn’t give them the right to slaughter 544 Atlantic white sided dolphins in a single day, like they did in 1988.”
    - And how many in total for that year?

“recently, studies have shown that the meat and blubber of pilot whales contain high amounts of mercury, PCBs, DDT and dieldrin. For what they do every year these animals deserve to get much more than mercury poisoning.”
    - Thank you for that!

And for those of you, that have commented on the text and pictures, and can’t even write your name here - I just can’t take you seriously.

    - Tina K. Jakobsen

btw, don’t think they are dolphins, it’s pilot whales, but if we had dolphins, we’d kill ‘em too. smart food for smart people. rofl… just kidding.
as mentioned before, there are lots of these whales, we usually catch a few hundreds in total every year, its an extremely small part of global stock.
now if it was the blue whale or some other animal that is nearly extinct, i could understand your wrath, i really dont understand why you think this animal is more special than a chicken, a sheep, a goat, a cow or any other animal we butcher millions of every year for food.
they’re not that clever, even a dog is more intelligent, most of you cityfolk have a distorted image of these animals (maybe because of movies like free willy etc, thats a guess)
if this is cruelty, then hunting deer for food is cruelty, going fishing for the weekend is cruelty, shall i continue? not to mention the extreme cruelty af raising cattle and pigs for food, a lifetime of torture, the killing itself could last hours, these whales are dead within 8 seconds. even if its “recreational” hunting, the people are extremely skilled at this. and by the way, when the swim up the beach, we put a device on them now - to drag them up, it does not hurt them (in old days we just hacked i giant hook in them) when they are close enough, a man with a specieal knife cuts down the spine, it dies right away…
there are lots of fact about this grindadrap elsewhere on the net, in stead of cursing us to hell, why don’t you read a bit about it, and then maybe express yourself, i can easily spot that most of you dont know shit about it, dont let stuff like the initial post of this thread misguide you.

people have been doing this to whales for thousands for years. only 100 years ago americans where doing it for oil, and beauty supplies. i dont like the killing of the dolphins in such large quantity. but the big whales, its only one or two lives being taken. one of those whales can probably feed a town for a month.

Hating the Faroese for hunting the same animal that they have hunted for food since viking times with high-minded and high-nosed ideas of what constitutes ‘humanity’ seems oddly hypocritical and ethnocentric. Since many of you cannot seem to understand English very well, I’d assume that you come from a different culture than the one being heinously misrepresented here. How would you like it if another culture were to insult one of your oldest practices? Even go as far as to wish YOUR collective deaths? This seemed to work well for colonists right? I mean, “we the enlightened have the fucking RIGHT to impose our moral compass and tendencies on others”, right? Of course not! One might wholeheartedly believe killing animals is morally repugnant — that is your right. However, hate isn’t a very good vehicle for any kind of moral change of heart, and self-righteousness leaves a bitter taste in people’s mouths. The average knee-jerk reaction and polarizing comments don’t help the main situation, which is: there are people that hold completely different ideas of what right and wrong, human/inhuman and culturally acceptable/unacceptable are. The main thing one should think of here is that the people in these photos DO NOT think what they are doing is wrong. What do YOU do that you think is completely normal, yet considered diabolical in another country? There is too much give and take, push and pull in this world to really be convinced one is the ideal human being to show everybody else how it’s done — that’s a kind of twisted vanity I’d prefer not to entangle myself in.

You cant include human survival in here. Although we DO need meat and fish to survive, those we eat are animals specifically raised for such purpose, and are killed in a painless and quick death. You cant say the same of those whales. And if they actually needed them to support the island economy, they would not fish them just once in a year (pretty much like in a festival or something). Actually the races that kills beacause of need, respects and jealously watches over the food source (in case they start to run out) since they understand the simbiotic (and thereof beneficial) relation implied. And on top of everything i wrote before, is the fact that they are at risk of extinction. So considering all that you can think in this much like hispanic’s bullfights. So i think we should strongly reject that kind of behavior.

Barney, while your point is valid to a certain extend, your statement falls down when you don’t consider that animals heading for the abbatoir are domesticated and their population is carefully controlled - there is a zero percent chance of cattle becoming extinct, or a shortage of cattle disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Coupled with the fact that in an abbatoir the animals are killed quickly via use of a bolt gun, not killed using hooks and allowed to bleed to death. Ergo it’s blatantly obvious you cannot compare these two very different situations of obtainig food.

Also - viking - to survive, we don’t NEED to kill animals. It is possible to survive without killing animals… and no, i’m not a vegetarian.

Xe, the population of these animals isn’t millions. It’s about 200-300,000 individuals.

EJ, i think maybe you need to remind yourself of the definition of humane…

Tina, thank you for correcting some facts and giving people more information so they are able to make fairer opinions.

Yes, i dont like the thought of Knackers, Slaughter houses, or the abbatoir, but seeing as i cant change history - no matter how dreadfully horrifiying, i might as well fight for the present.

These people deserve to be poisened by high MERCURY levels, thats a fact. Look at the picture, hard and close, about 3 quarters of the sea in that picture is stained red, why? Because of merciless slaughtering of pilot whales, for NO absolute reason.

I know its been going on for so long, but havent you noticed, after all these years? They die because of high mercury, and they still insist on eating these lovely graceful animals, when the bee is stinging you, why keep poking it?

It appears to me that if we compare to the ideal slaughterhouse (which does not exist) this event is worse in two aspects: 1) the animals being killed are highly intelligent and if one looked closely, similar to humans in many ways such as family bonds and communication with each other, and 2) the killing is brutal painful, with no effort to acknowledge the animals’ suffering.

Now, I am not a vegetarian, but I am also aware of how the animal industries including ocean fishing, are destructive. I do eat meat sometimes, however, partly because of the people I am with. Yes, that could be a whole other debate…

It appears to me likely that these islanders have become hardened and do not realize what they are doing. I will not claim to be “holier” than them, as we all take life on this planet, even by walking and accidentally crushing an insect. There is more of a difference of degree. The lack of awareness of animal suffering is saddening - I think it also exhibits lack of self-awareness. One buddhist master said to a question from a professional bird killer in Japan some centuries ago: “Don’t worry about your work killing birds, as long as you kill yourself each time you kill a bird.” We must feel connection and compassion to all animals and life, even those we may eat, and to minimize the suffering we cause. That is my feeling.

People are just scared that there might actually be some creature on this god dain earth that has intelegence to match it. Why do people poach elephants? Its cruel, but it still happens. So why do people kill piolet whales? I know they’ve been doing it for ages but still…havent they noticed most of the people that die around that time must have Mercury poisoning?

Humans have to destroy everything that is good and pure, dont they? The only evil in an animal is what man has put there. Animals have no sins. We arnt just polluting the earth, we’re polluting them to. Animals suck as the piolet whales have heart of pure gold, and a mind of silver, but some people just cant see beauty in these creatures, can they?

Every thing on earth has a soul, has a name, has feelings. Just becuase it doesnt look and think like you, doesnt mean its not equal. We’ve given creatures such as dogs/cats/horses a chance, so why not these creatures too? Dont they deserve mercy?

This is only cruel because you are humanizing the dolphins in your mind. When I go to a lake, throw in a fishing line and wait for a fish to bite the hook, I pull back with a quick thrust and jab a sharp barbed hook into the fish’s cheek. Most people do not consider fishing cruel, but if you treat those fish like humans, fishing would be illegal. Regardless of whether it is right or wrong the truth about nature is that we are successful because our nature is to kill. We are predators, and we should think and act like predators. Bears have no moral qualms about killing something when it is hungry, why do we? Our species has the largest pack size of any terrestrial animal, and one of the advantages of a pack is to kill more efficiently. These people are prime examples of why we are the dominant species. Bloody nasty and cruel, call it what you will, but the nature of man is every bit a part of nature as the herbivore plains animals. If you believe that men and animals are no different, the you should not judge us differently than a shark, if you believe that men are better than animals, you should have no remorse for the animals we slaughter.
