World’s longest necks

Now this is what I call stretching it!

The women of the Padaung tribe in northern Thailand hold the record for the longest necks in the world. According to tribal custom, even before they reach puberty, girls must start wearing iron coils around their necks and more and more are added through the years. The Padaung women say they only feel initial discomfort, as the distance between the ear lobe and the collar bone is stretched to 10 inches, double the average.

Although only girls born on a Wednesday of a full moon, were meant to wear the coils, to please the ever-growing tourist masses, other young girls are used as well.

The longest recorded neck reached 40 cm in length.

Maybe Tom Cruise should start wearing these? Add ‘easily’ badly needed 10 cm!

What happens if they take them OFF?!?

If they remove these coils, their necks will not be strong enough to stay up on its own… wich means they would die removing them, or at least get another form of support.

why would they do it in da 1st place?

Actually, they can remove the coils. I saw a special on the Discovery Channel where they removed the coils on a girl (I can’t remember why) and she was fine. But everyone thought she looked weird without them since they are so accustomed to seeing women with coils so she could not wait to get hers put back on.
