A middle-aged man from the Russian mining town of Vorkuta recently shared a video of his apartment that quickly grabbed people’s attention and went viral. In it, dozens of pigeons can be seen lined up on the furniture like they own the place, and the entire floor covered with droppings and feathers.
According to the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, the man left Vorkuta three years ago to work in Siberia, but forgot to close one of the apartment windows. That’s all the local pigeons needed to settle in, turning the man’s place into a pigeon metropolis.
“I left Vorkuta three years ago,” the apartment owner can be heard saying in a video. “What could have happened during that time? I come back, and it’s fu**ing pigeon Dubai! Nests, feathers, so much sh*t you could pour a new floor. They look at me like I’m a tenant behind on my rent. I’m not the landlord, I’m the invader of a pigeon state.”
The video of the devastated apartment spread like wildfire on Russian social media, sparking all sorts of funny comments, but the owner doesn’t really feel like laughing. Experts estimate that renovating the apartment and replacing all the furniture would cost between 1.5 and 2 million rubles, about as much as the place is currently worth on the current market.
Unfortunately, even if he decides that a renovation of Pigeon Dubai is worth it, the man has to consider the cost of making the place safely habitable again. According to experts, pigeons are susceptible to various diseases, including bird flu and psittacosis, so the floor and walls will have to be treated with special chemicals to ensure that no contaminants are left.
“It’s cheaper to buy a new one,” someone suggested, while another person joked that at least the pigeons left the man breakfast by laying eggs in his apartment.
