Taking a swim in the Devil’s Pool

If you’re ever in Zimbabwe, don’t miss the chance to take a swim in The Devil’s Pool, a small lagoon, enclosed by rocks, on the edge of one of the biggest, most beautiful waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls. Set on Livingstone Island, at a height of 103 meters, Devil’s Pool is definitely one of the most surreal locations on Earth.

Heard quite a few people get colon diseases and weird skin infections from getting scratched from the rocks after they go in there. You won’t get that info from a travel agent.

that scary but if you think like that you’ll never get to enjoy life, through the hospital. great picture though

I can see maybe letting adults swim in that but kids? Isn’t that quite dangerous??

  8. Poobar says:

Little known fact: You can do the same thing at Niagara Falls in USA/Canada.

  9. Jeff says:

    Widely known fact:
You most certainly can not do that at Niagara Falls in USA/Canada.

  10. Your Mom says:

Sorry Poobar, but you’re dead wrong on the Niagara falls idea. People are separated from the water by an iron barricade, and a few feet of shore. The force of the water even 100 feet from the edge is enough to suck you over. The formation of a wall and a shallow spot creating slower flow allows Devil’s Pool to be safe.
I’d love to see you try swimming at Niagara… just give me your bank card and pass code first, lol.

  11. He Said says:

I live in Niagara Falls and you absolutely cannot do that. You wouldnt even know what hit you if you got in. And there is no iron barricade either. Theres an iron fence at the main part but like 10 feet away you could jump in if you wanted to.

  12. ITS A MOST BEAUTIFUL AND AMEZING…

First of all, the Devil’s Pool is on the Zambia side of Victoria Falls, not Zimbabwe. I was just swimming in it a couple of weeks ago — and so far no weird colon diseases or skin infections.

It feels pretty safe, as it is in a spot where the water flow is not all that bad (you can only swim in it during the dry season, when the water is low). I even jumped into the pool from above. The main freaky part is realizing that you are right on the edge of a huge cliff. And to be honest, the freakiest part is the guides who help you, who stand right on the lip of the edge, with the water rushing over their feet. I would not have the guts to do that.

Little known fact. Poobar’s statement was sarcasm.

Widely known fact: People are humorless and slow witted.

GREAT I WOULD GO THERE ANYTIME!!

Awesome + Aweful= I’ll get heart attack if ever i go there. ;)

  18. Putude says:

NO WAY!!! so beautiful. But it also very dangerous especially when you bring your children.

very careles and any idiot who does that is taking the chance that could be fatal. Why?

  21. Kevin says:

Try telling that to adrenaline junkies.

Why do people skydive, rockclimb, BASE jump etc?

“If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much room.”

  22. Fritter says:

Well I’ve just come back from a trip to Livingstone and took a dip in the Devil’s Pool! Having done some ‘random’ things in my life I do have to say this definitely tops them all.

Firstly walking around the island and the views over the water falls are truly amazing! I strongly suggest this as a must to do in life!

But the trill of actually walking out into the water and swimming your way across to the pool is a definite rush. As they can only do this at certain parts of the year due to the water levels you do not have to be a strong swimmer as the current is not a strong as what it seems. For the majority of the trip there the water is low enough to walk across.

Jumping into the Devils Pool is just an amazing rush. Although you do not see them in the photos there are a number of ‘guides’ there with you who have your safety as your number one priority. The view and rush from laying on the rock pool edge is something I will never forget. For something that has dire consequences (they do have a perfect safety record by the way) I felt totally at easy laying on the rock pool edge.

If you are looking for an adventure which is out of the ordinary… This is definitely it and a must do for trill seekers!

  23. wondering says:

is it safe to jump from that cliff into the water below?

  24. Joe says:

It is in ZAMBIA and not in Zimbabwe, get your facts right

  25. someone says:

@wondering…well you can try and tell us how that went xD

  26. Medisoft says:

    That looks SO cool!

  27. meme says:

Sooo, if one wanted to plan a trip here – how do I go about finding a guide and such? I’m soooooo in for visiting in Dec 2010!

  28. Greg W says:

Wow, those are interesting. Would be interesting to visit that place.

  29. Richard says:

MEME, make a reservation for Livingstone Island through a travel agent or at the hotel near there. After that all is taken care of. The guides and helpers are all on the island and they will escort you across and into the pool

what a great place to be in !!

  32. PH says:

That must be the scariest place to be…. no way I’m doing it.

  33. chingom says:

A person died here here in the last few months. It is in zambia. The last picture is taken from the Zimbabwean side of the river. The best place to see the Falls is from Zimbabwe as you face the falls. The only thing to do in zambia is see the Falls from “behind”.

  34. Henrix says:

To those arguing about whether it is located in Zambia o Zimbabwe: don’t fight, google it – :) . “The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Mist that Thunders) is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe.” Now.. the “devil’s pool”… I will let you know as soon as I come back from it.

  35. Jeff says:

Life on the edge! Excellent photos.

I was in Zimbabwe for last four yrs..victoria falls is really amazing place
    wow!!!what a feeling u get..beautiful
after this there is one Zambia border where we can do bungy jumping..
There are seven falls like this ..but most dangerous is this “Devil pool”
but only on this pool u can go upto the edge..rest falls are very dangerous.
But this is really a life time experiance..

  38. lukwagoasuman says:

I would love to go visit this place, lots of mistery there and between i could imagine looking down at that big measure of feet truly amazing!!!!

  42. Rasha says:

I could NEVER do that…..although I would want to, it looks awesome! But, I would be afraid of being that one in a million chance that some fluke thing happens and sweeps me overboard. And I certainly would NEVER, EVER dream of taking children to the edge like that. Children are too unpredictable as it is….add a force of nature like that…and well,….honestly, I think parents that take their children to the edge like that are foolhardy, in my opinion. I applaud everyone’s bravery that does “do the falls”…..but honestly, taking your own life into your hands is one things….taking your kids to the edge….what were they thinking??
