Built back in the 10th century, the incredible well of Chand Baori, India was a practical solution to the water problem in the area. The arid climate forced the locals to dig deep for a dependable water source, one that would last throughout an entire year. Chand Baori well is 30 meters deep, it has 13 floors and 3,500 steps. Legends say that ghosts build it in one night and that it has so many steps to make it impossible for someone to retrieve a coin once it’s been dropped in the well.

August 20, 2008
thats not grass. it’s algae. probably has grown in the well because the well is not in use anymore.
also “baori” means well in hindi.
August 20, 2008
Hey there, city slickers: that is water with algae. Get out of your air-conditioned house and onto the countryside to see it with your own eyes. Now visible in a puddle near you!
August 20, 2008
I believe this was used in a scene in http://thefallthemovie.com/
August 20, 2008
I’m quite certain mr. “poopypants” was joking people.

Why would the ghosts in the legend need steps to go up and down? Don’t they float?
September 2, 2008
These photos have been passed around the inter web for years. well failed
September 2, 2008
friedlinx - I assume you also live/play 2nd Life? Well done for being a total gimp.
That water is foul. India is a very dirty, smelly place - quite disgusting and typically 3rd world (I would know)
September 2, 2008
You could play a awesome game of tag there.
September 2, 2008
Wow, unbelievable, nice find.
September 3, 2008
’shopped.
September 4, 2008
That place needs a Brita badly!
September 5, 2008
@AK-47 Hunger:
Don’t be an idiot, nobody drinks water like that- the well is closed. Just came back from India and it’s a big place, a subcontinent in fact, with great opulence and poverty side by side,… just like the states?
“Typically 3rd world and you would know”……tells people exactly what you ‘know’.
September 7, 2008
The difference with the US and India, and i have been to both in the last year is, people in India know that the US exists, the poverty in India is not there because some bunch of politicians has legislated to ensure that their friends retain the wealth, and if you asked an Indian if there are millions of people without any tangible social support system in their country they would tell the truth and say there is. Ask an American and they would say,”This is the best country in the world Buddie!” They would not mention that the level of poverty, though somewhat more localised ,is within the levels of some South American and Asian countries.
September 7, 2008
All in one night, eh? That sure is a lot of laying stone. I wonder where one can contact a ghost contractor…
September 7, 2008
WoW… No word to say…
September 8, 2008
PHOTOSHOPPED!
September 8, 2008
Hey AK-47…..Kill yourself.
September 8, 2008

September 8, 2008

September 9, 2008
Where are you from again? Clearly you have a misguided image of Americans.
September 9, 2008
looks like pixels wall.
September 9, 2008
I don’t know why anyone would need to photoshop it, the place exists. Google Earth shows it, though at a crappy resolution.
September 10, 2008
:O Simpsons did it.
I could totally have a big game of chicken, well that or me and budni can get some people together to have a big game of Tag. Who’s in…?
September 11, 2008
That looks cool. I need a pond like that in my front yard.
September 12, 2008
America is better than any other country. If you don’t believe that, then leave. If you are not a resident and don’t believe it, jump in the well.
September 13, 2008
THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 14, 2008
Hey, would it be okay with you guys if this didn’t erupt in name-calling?
Yes, America does have (overall) a pretty good standard of living and can be both beautiful and pleasant. But there is no guarantee that that is going to continue and there is no reason to slam anyone else for the conditions that they live under. The guy in Peru wearing the funky hat and herding “pushme-pullyou’s” lives on next to no money.
And he does just fine. He eats, his family gets together in the evenings, they celebrate weddings. And he doesn’t have to deal with the stresses we Americans do to obtain our “good life”. No cell phones in the restaurant. No exhaust fumes. No sirens in the night. Every night. Every few minutes.
No place is without problems … including the US, India, Pakistan, Great Britain, Polynesia and on and on.
The photos of the well are pretty neat. But if you aren’t the original author, how about at least a link to the site you copied them from?
Oh, and the algae is there because the water is presently shallow. It looks like it has been several feet higher in the past. Whatever … dependable water, even if it’s sort of green, beats dying of thirst.
September 17, 2008
OMG!…World is full of morons…This well is in a desert…its was like the most important part of the community in old days. Now water comes from pipes from far away lakes but not in those days….and i bet the proud people of Rajasthan kept it clean when it was in use.
September 18, 2008
I hate how people make judgments on peoples intelligence based on the country that they were born in. Stupid phucks.
September 20, 2008
awesome works…
September 20, 2008
awesome…
September 22, 2008
Wow i agree. The only thing it is missing is a damn slinky. Seriously, someone go there and you tube a slinky going down these steps!
September 28, 2008
Ah this is deadly. Definitely not photoshopped, there was a picture in one of my old school geography books. I swear, some people would look at a photo of the pyramids and say “shopped!”. And well done to Bill Canaday for retaining a little courtesy in a world gone mad with casual rudeness. I won’t even make a joke about how the polite peaceful guy happens to have “Canada” in his name.
September 30, 2008
Escheresque.
October 8, 2008
Am I the only one who’s sick and tired of assholes yelling “PHOTOSHOPPED!” at every fucking picture they see?? Why would anybody make a photoshopped pic of a WELL?? And who the fucked asked YOU whether it is photoshopped or not?? Fuck You!
October 13, 2008
Thoez picturez are pwiddy.
October 14, 2008
I agree with pennydog. Even if it is, most people don’t care, so shut up already!
October 19, 2008
The pyramids were shopped.
October 19, 2008
Whatever it is, it is. You can never change it. It is a historical monument and one that has people’s emotions attached to it. You have no f***ing right to say that it is photoshopped.
If you feel so, shove it into your own ass.
October 20, 2008
People have such silly ideas about what is good and bad. If you are in an arid country, you drink what is available to you. And, also, algae is a form of seaweed, yes? Well, who here has eaten sushi? Miso soup? Get over yourselves. Algae is an extremely healthy thing to eat. It has many vitamins, minerals, etc. Hell, I’ll eat it! Just because we call certain varieties seaweed and others algae does not make it the same stuff. Ever wonder what’s in a vitamin pill? Many of them use algae!
October 22, 2008
may be ur ancestors were not intelligent to bulid a well like this..
October 22, 2008
Bull shit
October 24, 2008
Amazing construction
October 25, 2008
Sarah Palin is the biggest liar in the world (well, except for George Bush and Dick Cheney, John McCain and Irene Flotzengluuber.)
October 25, 2008
digging a hole equals unemployed and broke
October 26, 2008
Are some people *that* moronic?! Of course the water is all green and algae ridden and of course no one drinks that *now*! They used to, when the well was built, 10 centuries ago…
October 26, 2008
ok what kinda person would be so sad to “shop” awell or any other monument, so shut the hell up. all you americans who are so far up your own arse you can see your stone heart, take a look at your own country before making judgements about others, india in those times needed water yes like all other places, and america hadnt been fucking discovered by then so well that means you had none of your slack jown yockal history then. algea is there because it grows on water did they have chlorine in those days? NO ok. well done to Bill canaday. and Big dirty heck just shut the fuck up you patriotic american twat, i would hurl a bucketload of insults at you but i feel that would annoy people.
this is an amazing peice of architechture it is amazing stop saying it’s shopped stop being patriotic. this forum was not made for people to start having a battle over simple things like what countries better than the other. ok britain in my eyes is the best but we all have opinions. can we not turn every forum into a big political mess and can we just admire this amazing building. PLEASE.
October 26, 2008
shut up you twat. i dont know if your trying to be funny, clever or just down right annoying but please shut up Bdiddy
October 26, 2008
Mmmm….
I can just imagine…
Under a full moon
Alone,
One must be able to find him(her)self in that well…
October 26, 2008
Excellent photographs!
October 31, 2008
This was indeed used in the movie The Fall, which came out earlier this year. Truly a visually fascinating and emotionally moving movie. I had no idea this was a real place. In the movie there are people on everyone of these steps and the whole idea of filling the steps with people and not having anyone accidentally plunge off of it seems so incredible that I thought it was a CGI set. I’m blown away to learn that this is a real place!
October 31, 2008
I agree with JB but why stop with one slinky; how about hundreds, at night painted in phosphorescent day-glow. Now that would be something
November 1, 2008
To see it yourself clear. Yourself , at the well, and all the else. and the one, the being “om” the beginning and the end. Alpha et Omega. Amor quam glomus. Es insipire, et finiri? salve. brother.
Peace
November 1, 2008
I accept, kindly send me a ticket and I’ll take the plunge.
November 1, 2008
An awesome looking monument.
November 2, 2008
this is a real well, built at a time when there were no machines or autocad programs for architectural design, there is another step- well called dada hari vav at adalaj just outside ahmedabad in gujarat, the carvings of which will blow you away…e mail me at gnc24@yahoo.com if you want to see the pics - trust me you can’t photoshop grandeur like this
November 2, 2008
[Look at the wonder of man and the works of his own hands.] This had to be a place of worship . A holy well wow … Do you notice its like a inverted pyramid…. Lots of peace man.
November 3, 2008
It wouldnt be impossible to get your coin!
November 4, 2008
Yes it was used on a movie, its in the gallery section of the site posted above. Lots of people using the stairs…
November 4, 2008
Some one should photoshop the slinkys into the picture. Considering how there is clearly overwhelming evidence that this is already a photoshopped picture to begin with, why not just go one step further and add the slinkys to it!
November 4, 2008
Mad People. Lots of them here.
What a wonderful work for a well. Shame on people who say its *shopped*. Those still pondering: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chand_Baori
November 5, 2008
What a remarkable place! Very nice pictures.
November 6, 2008
lol thought it was grass hehe
November 7, 2008
I am a proffessional photographer and I can tell you this was obviously photoshopped to make the well seem more impressive.
I am not saying the well doesnt exsist, it just exsists in a smaller capacity then what you see here, because a clever graphic designer ’shopped these photos.
If you look at the angle of the light, and the shadows, and where the seems meet from the shopped photos it is all blurry. A quick eye can tell you right away.
November 7, 2008
You are retarded.
November 8, 2008
THE CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURE OF SOCIETIES DIFFER FROM THE OTHER HOWEVER IT DOESN’T MEAN THAT U MORONS HAVE TO CRITICIZE IT. This is a masterpiece of a structure to show u how the power and intelligence of men can overcome any obstacle the may encounter. this society found a way to solve their water problems in those days unlike u modern humans . so please if u have nothing but sh#@t in your head keep it there. normal people worry me
November 8, 2008
hello people =)
this is very real its not photoshopped enless they photoshopped it to google world too and that is highly unlikely.
To add to that i would like to point out how rediculous it is that u are having this pointed out by a thirteen year old.
Have a good day and learn to like the awesome wonders around the world.
November 9, 2008
It’s an interesting well, nonetheless. I like how all of you are so violent.
November 12, 2008
If it was toxic, nobody would drink it, stupid!
November 12, 2008
Too bad the water is so dirty. Victim of the modern society.
November 15, 2008

November 22, 2008
