The geoduck or gooyduck is the largest species of clams on the face of the earth. The clam itself is 15 to 20 cm long, which is pretty big but the really impressive part is its long siphon that often reaches one meter in length. it weighs between 0.5 and 1.5 kilograms, but there have been stories about 7.5 kg heavy gooyducks.
The incredible aspect of the gooeyduck isn’t only limited to its size, but also to its lifespan. It has a life expectancy of 146 years, which makes it one of the longest-living organisms in the animal reign.
As repulsive as they look (personal opinion) geoducks are a delicacy in China and Japan, where they are often eaten raw, sashimi style.

The giant clam is bigger by quite a bit (200+ kg or so).
They’re certainly ‘interesting’ looking clams, but hardly the largest. The giant clam can weigh over 225 kgs and 1.2m long
TAKES Me back almost 50 years to when we visited mom’s aunt and uncle on the beach in Washington and we went gooeyduck clamming.
They had no family other than us, no one ever visited and aunt Emma told dad she would will the place to us when they passed.
Dad turned her down since although we so did enjoy each other’s company. that was the only time we had ever actually seen them. Wonder what’s on that property today and how life might have been different if he had taken her up on the offer.
Gooeyducks do taste absolutely fabulous and just a couple make a great meal but, you do have to get over their appearance to fully enjoy.
Those r geoducks, as seen on mike rowe’s dirtiest jobs, and i can know cause geoducks are my hobby!!

Giant Clams are Geoducks, if you eer cared to notice or read about them.
I remember poking these things in the korean market when I was a kid.

Wo,All look like penis!!
From the clams persective, penises look like clams’ feet; after all, I am sure the clams were here first!
Must make a great chowda!
u dont have to have much imagination
My family has been going geoducking for 57 years, annually. We are just getting ready to head up for this year’s tide. It is beyond just the clam. There is camping, butter clamming, wild greens harvesting, oystering, family, friends, and just the whole entire gestalt of the experience. One definitely harvests geoducks for the entire experience. One must ‘grok’ the entirety. Not for the faint of heart.
Kevin,
I don’t know where you read it, but giant clams are not geoducks.
Giant clams and geoducks aren’t even in the same order.
With all the respect to the above comments this has got to be the ugliest thing i’ve seen…..
i do think these things are pretty gross looking, but that’s what they are. i think the are actually really interesting, because they are different kind of clam, i think that people should respect that.
Giant clams and Geoducks aren’t the same thing. Geoducks are sometimes called giant clams, due to the fact that they are a rather large mollusk. However, Geoducks species name is Panopea abrupt, whereas Giant clams’ species name is Tridacna gigas. They are related, but they aren’t even of the same genus. Just “Google” the name “Giant clam” and you’ll see. In fact, the worlds’ largest pearl came from Tridacna gigas. It is often referred to as “The Pearl of Allah”, because of its’ striking resemblance to a man with a beard wearing a turban. The divers that found it happened to be Muslim, and took it as a sign from the prophet Mohammad.
Nice clam….BIG!
