Monaco is home to some of the world’s most expensive residences, but the European Principality recently set a new world record for the most expensive residential transaction ever recorded.  System Capital Management (SCM), a holding company owned by Ukraine’s richest man, Rinat Akhmetov, acquired a 21-room penthouse in the Le Renzo building for over $500 million.

The world’s most expensive apartment is spread over five floors and covers an area of over 26,900 square feet at the top of an exclusive building right on Monaco’s waterfront, offering stunning views of the sea. It features 21 rooms, eight exclusive parking spaces, several terraces with direct views of the Mediterranean, a private pool and jacuzzi, premium furnishings, and state-of-the-art home automation technology.

The outrageous price tag of the world’s most expensive residence is a combination of factors. Monaco, Europe’s smallest sovereign state after the Vatican, has some of the world’s highest real estate prices, with the estimated price per square metre crossing the €70,000 ($82,300) threshold last year. Also, the Le Renzo building was the first in decades to change the skyline of the principality, making it a unique development. And finally, the layout of the penthouse is similar to a five-storey mansion at the top of a luxurious apartment building on the Mediterranean.

Rinat Akhmetov’s purchase beat the previous records for the world’s most expensive residential transaction by quite a large margin. The previous world records were the purchase of Nick Candy’s London mansion for over $350 million and that of a New York penthouse purchased by hedge fund manager Ken Griffin for around $240 million.
