Womans Wins Court Battle to Have Adult Sons Evicted from Her Home

An Italian woman recently won a court case to have her two sons, ages 40 and 42, evicted from her home after they refused to leave the nest or contribute to the household in any way.

They say a mother’s love is infinite, but there is only so much even a loving mother can take. Take the story of this Italian woman who had no choice but to go to court to have her two adult sons evicted. The 75-year-old woman from the city of Pavia, in northern Italy, had long tried to talk her two children to finally move out of the family home, especially since they both had jobs and could afford to rent their own places. But they never even entertained the idea, and since they wouldn’t even pitch in financially or do house chores, the elderly woman had no choice but to take them to court.

The bizarre court case recently concluded with the verdict of Judge Simona Caterbi who sympathized with the 75-year-old mother and issued an eviction notice against the two sons, aged 40 and 42. In her ruling, the judge argued that while it is the “obligation of the parent to provide maintenance” to their children until they reach the age of 18, the same is not justifiable when the children are in their 40s.

The two bamboccioni (big babies), a term first used by an Italian politician in 2007 to mock adults still living with their parents, now have until December 18 to move out of their mother’s home. It’s going to be an awkward month and a half, that’s for sure…

Interestingly, Italy has one of the highest proportion of adults still living with their parents. According to data from 2022, almost 70 percent of adults ages 18 to 34 still live at home with their parents. Still, cases where an eviction notice against one’s children to leave the nest are very rare.
