The ASUS Motherboard Mona Lisa

The technological masterpiece on display inside the ASUS headquarters in Peitou, Taiwan, is a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci’s work and represents the company’s pledge to support “any kind of crazy ideas”

The Techno Mona Lisa may not look as detailed as the classic painting, but there’s a good reason for that. As you probably know, ASUS is the world’s biggest motherboard manufacturer in the world and they decided to celebrate that by recreating a famous work of art using motherboard components and computer chips. I’m not sure exactly sure how many motherboards were used in the process, but it’s definitely a fine piece of geek art.

Russian Mafia Tombstones

Say what you will about Russian mobsters, but you can’t say they lack artistic sense. Too bad it only shows on their tombstones.

These photos were taken in the cemetery of Dnepropetrovsk, in the Ukraine, a place much like the mafia-infested Yekaterinburg, in Mother Russia. Although the two cities are 2,000 km apart, mafia fashion is very much the same.

During the Russian Mafia Wars of the ’90s bosses started commissioning these lavish tombstones for them and their loyal subjects. A macabre masterpiece like this costs betwee $8,000 and $250,000, but I can bet that was never a problem.

Is That A Dragon on Your Back?!?

It certainly looks like a dragon biting on this dude’s shoulder, but he doesn’t seem at all alarmed, does he?

That’s probably because the thing on his back is just a backpack. But it’s by far the most awesome backpack I’ve ever seen! Called the Dragon Backpack, this masterpiece was designed by a young artist by the name of Bob Basset, from Kharkov, Ukraine. Be sure to check his website for more cool stuff.

I keep staring at these photos, but I can’t get over how cool this thing looks…

World’s Largest Bikini Parade

Hundreds of girls dressed only in their bikini take to the streets. I know, it’s every guy’s fantasy, but for once it came true, in South Africa.

That’s right boys, 287 girls walked 1,690 meters on Melrose Arch Boulevard, in Johannesburg,  and set a new Guinness record for the World’s Largest Bikini Parade. The girls used their sexuality to draw attention to the issue of breast cancer, a condition that affects one in every thirty South-African women.

The event took place on November 9th, 2009

Featuring a series of gilded components, Lux Gold Fossball is the ultimate toy for ultra-rich foosball fans.

All the metal parts of Lux Gold are gilded, the rods are made of stainless steel and the figurines can be painted in 12 different colors. This is pretty much how the company explains the $29,724 price-tag on this baby. The world’s largest foosball table is one of a kind and doesn’t even come close to that amount.

Man Builds Pan Am Cabin in His Garage

Whenever he wants to experience the luxury of the old Pan Am first class cabins, all Anthony Toth has to do is spend a little time in his garage.

The 42-year-old Redondo Beach resident has spent the last five years turning his old garage into a perfect replica of a 1970s Pan Am World Airways 747 first class cabin. The airplane enthusiast spent the last 20 years of his life looking for original parts for his project and he reckons he invested around $50,000 in it, so far.

At the entrance of Anthony Toth’s Airplane Garage visitors can consult an old departures board and as soon as they enter the cabin, they are welcomed with original in-flight audio recordings from the ’60s and ’70s.

Everything in the Airplane garage has Pan Am written on it, even the on-board peanuts come in Pan Am packaging. Congratulations for keeping the spirit of Pan Am alive, but I like Tony Alleyne’s Star Trek Apartment a lot more.

Sexiest Swine Flu Protest to Date

Guys will definitely appreciate these photos a lot more than girls, but I’m sure we can all agree the Ukrainian FEMEN group can protest in the most original way.

If you didn’t know anything about FEMEN, they are a group of women from the Ukraine, who protest in the most unusual ways, in order to raise awareness to feminist issues in their country. In an attempt to draw attention on the plight of Ukrainian prostitutes, the group’s members dressed-up as nurses “to cure foreigners of sex-addiction”

On November 9, 2009, the sexy members of FEMEN attracted quite a crowd in Kyiv square, when they appeared dressed in underwear made from swine flu masks. This was their way of protesting against authorities using the flu outbreak to scare citizens before Ukraine’s presidential elections, on January 17.

FEMEN members acknowledged it’s their sexiness that draws attention and admits most people would ignore their protests if they were wearing normal clothes.

The Sweetest Star-Wars Imperial Walker

I’m not a big Star-Wars fan, but I’ve got to say this Imperial Walker looks good enough to eat.

But who could muster the courage to take the first bite and ruin such a culinary masterpiece? I mean look at this thing, it looks almost just like the real thing and it even has that ship wrapping a cable around its legs, just like in the Star-Wars movie. There’s no question this frosting-covered Imperial Walker cake looks bad-ass, but I can’t help wonder what it tastes like? And is there a chance a stormtrooper could get stuck between your teeth? Hmm…

The Story of the Cardrona Bra Fence

The Cardrona Bra Fence was one of the most bizarre tourist attractions in New Zealand. Located in Central Otago, it was admired by some, but considered an eyesore by others.

The famous fence was born on Christmas of 1999, when 4 bras were discovered hanging on the fence. Word spread fast and, by the end of February, 60 bras were dancing in the wind, at Cardrona. They were soon removed, but news of the Bra Fence spread fast and by the year 2000, over 200 bras covered the fence. Once again, the bras just disappeared, but by 2006 over 800 women underwear garments were hanging in the wind.

While some of the locals were grateful for this offbeat tourist attraction, some landowners found the Cardrona Bra Fence vulgar and made attempts to have it removed. Because it was located on public road reserve, the local council declared the fence a traffic hazard and ordered the bras removed.

Though it no longer exists, the story of the Cardrona Bra Fence won’t soon be forgotten and thankfully, there are some photos around the interwebs:

The Michael Jackson Phone

I’m sure Michael Jackson would actually like the over-the-top design of this Chinese cell, it’s cashing in on the dead he might have a problem with.

This limited edit Michael Jackson Phone is apparently a replica of a Vertu, plated with gold and studded with plastic diamonds (gold and fake diamonds, a deadly combo). Technical specifications and prices aren’t yet available, but if you don’t live in China, you’ll probably never hold one of this babies in your hand. We do know it comes together with a Michael Jackson live performance DVD and has an impressive number of Michael Jackson ringtones.

Watts Tower – One Man’s Dream Turned Reality

“I had in mind to do something big and I did it.” That’s what Simon Rodia said about his work.

Designed by Italian immigrant Sabato (Simon) Rodia, Watts Towers are a famous example of vernacular architecture, located in the Watts district, Los Angeles. The talented construction worker spent all his spare time, between 1921 and 1954, working on this collection of 17 interconnected steel towers. The amateur structures are made from steel rods wrapped in wire and coated in mortar.

Rodia decorated his architectural masterpieces with found stuff, like bottle caps, seashells, broken glass and pottery. Children from all over the neighborhood would search for pieces of glass and bring it to Simon Rodia, in hope their findings would be included in his project.

Unfortunately, the talented Italian didn’t get along with his neighbors and he’d often find his Watts Towers vandalized. One day, sick of all the abuse, he left and never came back. In the following years his work became more and more popular, but the towers were about to be teared down by the city, when community activists formed the Committee for Simon Rodia’s Towers in Watts and managed to save them.

Nowadays, Watts Towers is a Historical Park.

Golden Buddha Phone – The Holiest of Gadgets

The Golden Buddha Phone has all the features of ordinary top-of-the-line cells, but also offers a virtual prayer room where users can pray to Buddha and various Bodhisattva.

This techno-jewel sports a piece of real jade, pearl powder lacquer and a 24 karat gold paint-job that make it the most expensive cell-phone in China, at $1,750. Although the iPhone or Blackberry seem like better choices from a technological and financial point of view, neither of them offers a virtual prayer room. That’s what makes the Golden Budha Phone stand out. Stressed-out business men and women will have the opportunity to relax by praying to Buddhist Illuminati like :  Sakyamuni, Maitreya, Bhaisajya, Amitabha, Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Kwan-yin or Ksitigarbha.

Unfortunately the Goldne Buddha Phone is compatible with GSM on only two frequencies: 900Mhz and 1800Mhz, so it won’t work in the USA, Canada or Mexico.

This must be an upgrade of the original Buddha Phone.

Elaine Davidson – The Human Pincushion

Elaine Davidson is a Brazilian-born nurse, living in Edinburgh, Scotland, who has made a name for herself by decorating her body with over 6,000 piercings.

In 1997, Elaine had 280 piercings, quite a few for any other body-modder, but just the beginning for her. In 2000 she was acknowledged as the world’s most pierced woman, by the Guinness Book of Records, with 462 piercings, of which 192 on her face. But she kept adding to her collection, and in May 2008 she had 5,920 piercings. As of February 2009 Elaine is the proud bearer of 6,005 pieces of metal.

Most of Elaine Davidson’s piercings are in her genitalia, over 500, located both on the outside and on the inside. The total weight of her “jewelry” adds up to three kilograms. Doctors claim this type of extreme modding involves serious risks, such as infection and transmission of diseases like hepatitis or AIDS.

Despite her bizarre appearance, Elaine wants the public to know she doesn’t do drugs, drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. Her only vice is Coca-Cola.
