Estonian Theater Stages Unique Romeo and Juliet Play with Construction Vehicles as Actors

Estonian theater Kinoteater recently staged one of the most unusual versions of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” featuring heavy-duty vehicles as actors and a limestone quarry as the stage.

“Romula ja Julia” was a nearly wordless performance that relied on the movements and interactions of dozens of vehicles to convey the classic love story. Romeo was represented by a rally truck, while Juliet was a red Ford pickup truck, and the climactic duel between Tybalt and Mercutio was interpreted by two excavators dangling their metal buckets in front of each other. Designed as one big experiment about what it means to stage a Shakespearean classic today and whether artists can find new ways to do it, Romula ja Julia attracted international attention because of its unusual cast.

A Czech woman got her 15 minutes of international fame after entering the ice rink during a youth hockey game to protest a series of penalties against her son’s team.

After a short shoving match with one of the referees, the woman is forcefully pushed off the ice, but continues to hurl insults and flip the bird to the referees, before walking out on the ice once again. She is once again escorted out before the video cuts off.

European Couple Are Selling Wedding Tickets to Strangers to Cover Event Costs

There is a new wedding trend sweeping Europe – couples are selling wedding tickets to perfect strangers to help cover the rising costs of these momentous events.

Katia Lekarski, who founded Invitin earlier this year, came up with the idea of selling tickets to weddings while renting her home in south-eastern France to some people who were attending a wedding. Her five-year-old daughter asked, ‘Why aren’t we also invited to weddings?’ and that’s when it hit her – there are other people who simply don’t get invited to weddings as much as they’d like, so what if she could sell that as a service. She would be helping newlyweds cover some of the costs of organizing a wedding and make some money for herself as a commission. Now Invitin has several couples willing to sell tickets to their wedding on the platform, and plenty of people willing to pay hundreds of euros to attend.

Homeless Flip-Flop-Wearing Man Completes 8Km Running Race to Treat His Hangover

A homeless Brazilian man recently received international attention after a video of him competing in a running race in flip-flops went viral on social media.

When Isaque dos Santos Pinho decided to show up at the starting line of an 8km running race in his hometown of Garrafão do Norte on July 27, he had no idea it would change his life forever. The local homeless man had been drinking and thought that running would help alleviate the symptoms of a hangover, so even though he hadn’t registered for the competition like everyone else and was wearing flip-flops instead of running shoes, he darted from the crowd when the starting signal came. The moment was captured on camera by a drone flying overhead, and the footage of the visibly inebriated, flip-flop-wearing man giving it his all immediately got people curious on social media.

He was immediately transported to the local hospital, conscious, with his eyes open. According to the doctors’ report, he ‘babbled incoherently, but could still speak,” despite his serious injury. China Literally Shaves Down Mountains to Make Room for Expressway

Why bother drilling tunnels when you can simply shave down mountains? That was apparently the philosophy behind the new Lu’an Expressway in China’s mountainous Guizhou Province.

We have already written about the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the soon-to-be-inaugurated world’s highest bridge (625 meters or 2,051 feet above the Beipan River Valley), but the expressway running through the mountains of Guizhou and leading to the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge has also been getting a lot of attention lately. Viral videos of the impressive infrastructure project sparked controversy on social media because of the way it was built compared to other roads in the area. Instead of drilling towers through mountains or building around them, Chinese engineers decided to literally slice off mountain faces to make room for the Guizhou Lu’an Expressway.

Brazilian Cow Produces 343 Liters of Milk in Three Days, Sets New Record

During a recent dairy tournament in Brazil, a Girolando cow set a new national record for milk production by a single cow in a period of three days, with a whopping 343 liters (90.6 gallons).

Brazil’s Girolando cow breed, a cross between Holstein and Gir cattle, has long been famous for its incredibly high milk production. The average Girolando yields 3,600 liters (950 gallons) of milk per 305-day lactation period, but some specimens can produce well over 100 liters (26.4 gallons) per day. Brazilian cattle farmers take great pride in owning record-setting Girolandos, a breed developed in the South American country, and compete against each other in dairy tournaments to see whose cows yield the most milk in a set period of time. During a recent tournament in Delfim Moreira, southern Minas Gerais, a Girolando cow set a new national record by producing 343 liters of milk in a three-day period.

South Korean Women Are Getting Shoulder Fillers to Emulate K-Pop Idol Look

Women and some men in South Korea are paying big bucks for shoulder filler injections to get so-called “perfect 90-degree shoulders” popularized by K-pop idols.

When Blackpink’s Jennie launched her song ‘Like Jennie,’ she probably didn’t mean it as an encouragement for her fans to go to any lengths to be like her, but that didn’t stop people from doing just that. According to recent media reports, the South Korean artist is one of the several K-pop idols who inspired a controversial plastic surgery trend that has people injecting fillers into their shoulders to achieve a sharply angled look. Some opt to enhance their look with another procedure called Barbie Botox or Trap Botox, which relaxes the trapezius muscles and makes the shoulder and neck lines look longer and slimmer.

Farmer Gives Away $400,000 to the Poor Because God Told Him He Woud Go to Heaven

An Irish High Court Justice recently appointed a guardian ad litem to represent the best interests of a farmer who sold his property and gave most of the money to the poor because God told him he would go to Heaven.

Giving to charity is commendable, but some people’s generosity can seem suspicious in certain situations. Take the case of an Irish farmer in his 40s who sold his property a few months ago for about €600,000 ($700,000) and has already given more than half of that money to the poor. The farmer, whose name has not been revealed by the media, had allegedly been told by God to give away all of his money, and if he did so, he would get to heaven. Taking that heavenly message to heart, he sold his farm and has been busy giving away his fortune ever since. Justice Michael Twomey heard that just last week, the farmer gave €1,000 cash to a homeless woman he met, and that in a matter of weeks, his bank account balances had dropped significantly.

Man Scammed into Buying 300 Years of Gym Membership

A Chinese man was recently scammed by a Hangzhou gym into spending more than 870,000 yuan ($121,000) on hundreds of years of gym memberships and private lessons.

The average life expectancy in China is around 78 years, but one Hagzhou man will have to figure out a way to live a lot longer if he plans to take full advantage of the 300-years-worth of gym memberships he was scammed into paying a fortune for. The victim, referred to only as Jin by Chinese media, had been training at the Ranyan Fitness gym in his home city for three years, when he was approached by a salesperson with an offer he simply couldn’t refuse. Mr. Jin was told that Ranyan was launching a special offer for loyal members only, selling them cheap long-term memberships that they would then resell to new members for double the price. As it often happens, it all turned out to be too good to be true.

Chinese Researchers Develop Innovative Self-Cleaning Glass

Scientists at China’s Zhejiang University have developed a new type of thin, transparent glass that can clean itself with the help of built-in electrodes that create an electric field.

Surface particle pollution has long been a problem that science has struggled to solve. From dirty windows in inaccessible places to photovoltaic panels in the middle of the desert, dealing with dust, sand, and other particles is often difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. But what if glass surfaces could simply clean themselves regularly? It sounds like the kind of technology you’d expect to see in a sci-fi blockbuster, but a team of researchers in China claims to have invented a type of self-cleaning glass that can remove up to 98% of surface particles in just a few seconds, without the use of water and chemicals.

Afghanistan’s Unique Roof-Mounted Vehicle Cooling Units

Because car AC units break down too often and repairs are too expensive, Afghan taxi drivers often turn to handmade roof-mounted rudimentary cooling units.

Driving through Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city, you’re likely to see taxis with large rectangular boxes mounted on the roof and large tubes extending from them and into the cabin, through a rear window or through a hole cut into the roof. They are handmade cooling devices meant to replace the cars’ built-in air-conditioning systems, which tend to break down when they are most needed and cost a fortune to repair. Similar to industrial evaporative air cooling installations, these boxes can lower temperatures by 12 degrees Celsius through water evaporation, they are less noisy than air conditioning systems and consume way less power. They’re just not meant for vehicle installation.
